Due to the countless questions and doubts about how much noise the sound moderator reduces in an air rifle, we have decided to make a small analysis and review of some of these technologies. The Compact technology from Cometa, and the Whisper and Whisper Maxxim from Gamo.
Testing the sound moderator of an air rifle
We are going to do a versus between 4 carbines. Two at a time.
- The Gamo Shadow 1000 between the Gamo Whisper Maxxim
- The Comet Fenix 400 and the Comet Fenix 400 GP Compact
First carbine sound moderator comparison
Gamo Shadow 1000
Gamo's Shadow 1000 air rifle, which features only a point-blank muzzle, without any noise reduction technology
Presentation of the Gamo Shadow 1000 carbine where we can appreciate that it does not incorporate any type of sound reduction technology.
Here we can hear the sound of a Gamo Shadow 1000 firing. As we can hear, not having any kind of sound moderator, the noise of the shot is considerable.
Now we will see its opponent:
Gamo Whisper Maxxim Carbine
The Gamo Whisper Maxxim airgun, incorporates the Whisper Maxxim technology, where the whole barrel works as a sound moderator and also the muzzle, where we can appreciate that it has an air stripper that allows to stabilize the shot and also works as a moderator.
In this video we have a presentation of the Gamo Whisper Maxxim and its shooting. As we can see it has a coated barrel and an air stripper at the end of it, which helps to dissipate the sound even more. The shot is barely audible. Therefore we give the winner of this first comparison to the less noisy carbine, the Gamo Whisper Maxxim.
Second carbine sound moderator comparison
Cometa Fenix 400
And we move on to Cometa, with the famous Cometa Fenix 400, it incorporates a muzzle that leaves an impressive sound of the shot, a trademark of the house.
And here is the video of the presentation where we can see the muzzle of this carbine and its firing sound. As we hear, the sound of the shot is important, perhaps the Kite has been the loudest we've heard so far, but we'll wait to see what the Premier Compact does before declaring a winner.
Contender's turn:
Cometa Fenix Premier Compact Carbine
The Cometa Fenix 400 Premier Compact carbine features Cometa's sound moderator. It is incredibly effective and the sound is barely audible. It has a dry shooting noise and does not produce a loud sound, quite the opposite.
Below is the video of the presentation and the noise of the shot.
We see that it incorporates a large and important sound moderator and its shot is really quiet, compared to the Cometa Fenix it is a much lower sound by far.
Final analysis of the carbines
Among all these carbines, for the quietest sounding shot we would perhaps go with the Gamo Whisper Maxxim Carbine, although the Cometa Fenix 400 Compact is not far behind. Although it is a matter of taste, maybe we like a carbine that makes more noise than a silent one, or then we like a very quiet carbine, so as not to disturb the neighbours, in test firing, etc.
Anyway, we leave you the video where we show the 4 of them in full.
You can be sure that whatever carbine you are looking for for any need, we have them!
We have them!
