Which PCP compressor suits your setup?

First, decide whether you will fill the airgun’s onboard reservoir only or also a separate charging cylinder. Then consider how many fills you need and where you will use the compressor. A compact model may suit occasional rifle filling; several consecutive fills require particular attention to airflow and permitted running time.

Power supply: mains, 12 V and portable use

Depending on the model, a compressor may run from mains electricity or accept a DC source, such as a compatible battery. Check whether the mains power supply is built in, supplied separately or purchased as an extra, and which cables are included.

A 12 V rating does not automatically mean you can use a vehicle’s cigarette lighter or accessory socket. The power source and connections must support the required current. Follow the model’s instructions rather than assuming compatibility from voltage alone.

For portable use, compare weight, dimensions and everything needed to operate the unit. An external cooling system or separate power supply can add to the equipment you need to carry.

Pressure, airflow and filling time

Maximum output pressure and specified fill pressure

The compressor must be suitable for reaching your reservoir’s specified fill pressure. Its maximum output pressure does not permit you to exceed the pressure limits of the airgun, fill hose or fittings.

How to compare airflow figures

Two compressors that reach the same pressure may take different amounts of time to complete a fill. Check how airflow has been measured: intake displacement or a flow rate expressed as free air is not directly equivalent to the volume delivered at high pressure.

A useful filling-time comparison specifies the reservoir volume, starting pressure and final pressure. Temperature and required cooling intervals also matter. Topping up after a shooting session is a different workload from filling from a much lower starting pressure.

Cooling and duty cycle

Compressing air generates heat. Some units use air cooling, while others use a water circuit. Check the arrangement on each model. An integrated cooling circuit may reduce the number of external components, but it still requires the prescribed checks and maintenance.

The duty cycle sets the permitted operating and rest periods under specified conditions. Before buying, check the maximum running time, required cooling intervals and temperature limits. Maximum pressure and physical size alone are not enough to choose a suitable compressor.

Automatic shut-off: which function does the model offer?

Pressure-controlled automatic shut-off stops the fill at the selected pressure, where this feature is fitted. It is different from thermal protection or a timed stop: these functions serve different purposes.

Automatic shut-off makes filling more convenient, but the filling process must remain supervised. Check the pressure setting and monitor operation as instructed in the manual. Protective features do not replace compliance with the equipment’s operating limits.

Filtration, moisture and maintenance

Air treatment is part of choosing a PCP compressor. A particle filter, condensate separator and desiccant filter do not necessarily perform the same task. Check what the model includes and which additional components its manufacturer recommends.

• Filtration: compatibility, working pressure and the types of contaminants the filter is designed to remove.
• Consumables: availability and replacement intervals for filter elements and desiccant media.
• Lubrication: the specified lubricants and application points; maintenance requirements vary between models.
• Draining and inspection: the prescribed condensate-draining procedure and checks of hoses, seals and fittings.

Adding a filter does not automatically make the compressed air suitable for breathing. Filling breathing apparatus requires a system expressly designed and suitable for that application.

Can a PCP compressor fill a charging cylinder?

Only if the manufacturer approves that use and the cylinder volume concerned. A rifle reservoir and a separate cylinder holding several litres require very different quantities of air. Maximum compressor pressure alone does not establish suitability.

Complete your PCP filling setup

Check the fitting at the end of the fill hose and whether your airgun needs a model-specific fill probe. Two airguns sharing the same calibre or brand do not necessarily use the same filling connection.

Frequently asked questions about PCP compressors

Which compressor do I need for my PCP air rifle?

Choose a unit compatible with the rifle’s fill pressure, reservoir volume and filling connection. Then compare power supply, cooling, duty cycle and maintenance against how often you intend to use it.

Can a workshop compressor fill a PCP airgun?

A conventional workshop compressor does not normally reach the pressures required by a PCP airgun. You need a high-pressure compressor designed for that application and suitable for the reservoir you intend to fill.

Do all PCP compressors reach 300 bar?

No. Maximum pressure depends on the model and version. Check the manufacturer’s specification for the exact unit rather than assuming it matches another compressor from the same brand.

How long does it take to fill a reservoir?

It depends on the reservoir volume, starting and final pressures, and the compressor’s effective airflow. Cooling intervals can also affect the total time. A filling-time claim without those conditions is not a reliable basis for comparing machines.

Can I connect it to any 12 V battery?

No. As well as providing the correct voltage, the battery, cables and connections must meet the manufacturer’s current and connection requirements. Use a power source and wiring expressly suitable for the model.

Can a compressor with automatic shut-off run unattended?

No. Filling must be supervised so that pressure, temperature and any abnormal behaviour can be monitored. Automatic shut-off is an operating aid, not approval for unattended use.

Can a portable PCP compressor fill an air cylinder?

Only if its manufacturer approves that cylinder volume and pressure. Being portable or reaching the required pressure does not prove that the unit can handle the longer running time needed to fill a separate cylinder.

Do I need an external filter?

That depends on the air treatment already fitted and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Check what the supplied filter does before adding another. Observe the working pressure and maintenance requirements of each component.

Do all PCP compressors need oil or cooling water?

No. Lubrication and cooling requirements vary by model. Use only the fluids and procedures specified for your compressor; another model’s instructions may not apply.

Can I use a compressor with an airgun from another brand?

Yes, provided the fill pressure, permitted volume and connections are compatible. Brand alone does not determine compatibility. A specific fill probe or adaptor may be needed.

What should I do if I notice a leak or unusual noise?

Stop the fill using the manufacturer’s shutdown procedure and consult the manual or technical support. Do not work on pressurised connections or keep the compressor running to compensate for a leak.
