Single-shot and multi-shot PCP air pistols

The loading system determines how the next pellet enters the barrel. This is separate from the filling system, which replenishes the air in the reservoir.

A semi-automatic model cycles the action without requiring you to operate a bolt or lever between shots. Each trigger pull fires one shot. Check that the specification explicitly confirms semi-automatic operation for the version you are considering.

How to choose a PCP air pistol

Start with your intended use and the equipment you already own. High muzzle energy or velocity alone tells you little about accuracy or ease of handling.

• Intended use: recreational shooting, target practice and competition place different demands on grip design, sights and adjustment options.
• Weight and balance: consider the dimensions, weight distribution and comfort in your usual shooting position.
• Grip: check the size and whether it is right-handed, left-handed or ambidextrous.
• Trigger and sights: compare the available adjustments and mounting options for any additional sighting equipment.
• Reservoir and shot count: check reservoir capacity, maximum fill pressure and the stated number of usable shots per fill for that version.
• Included equipment: confirm whether a magazine, single-shot tray, fill probe, adaptor or case is supplied.
• Total budget: include filling equipment, pellets and the accessories you actually need.

Accuracy, regulators and shot count

A PCP pistol does not use the moving spring-and-piston assembly that compresses air during the firing cycle of a conventional spring-piston air pistol. This removes a significant source of vibration. Accuracy still depends on the barrel, trigger, pellets, ergonomics and shooting technique.

What does a regulator do?

A regulator keeps the air pressure supplied to the firing valve as consistent as possible within its operating range. This can help maintain consistent pellet velocity while reservoir pressure remains within the required range.

Not every PCP pistol has a regulator. An unregulated model can also perform well within its usable pressure range.

What does the pressure gauge show?

Depending on the design, the gauge indicates reservoir pressure or pressure elsewhere in the system. Check what your model's gauge measures and follow the manufacturer's guidance for filling and use.

How many shots can you expect per fill?

Shot count depends on reservoir volume, the usable pressure range, the pistol's configuration and air consumption. When comparing figures, distinguish between the total number of shots possible and the usable shots that maintain the consistency you need.

PCP air pistols for training and competition

For target practice, prioritise a comfortable grip, suitable sights and a trigger you can control consistently. A recreational pistol may be useful for practice without offering the same features as a purpose-built match air pistol.

With competition models, pay particular attention to grip size, handedness, balance and adjustment options. Before buying, check that the pistol and its configuration meet the requirements of your chosen discipline.

Which calibre should you choose?

• .177 (4.5 mm): widely used for target and precision shooting, with pellets available in a range of weights and head shapes.
• .22 (5.5 mm): available in various recreational models. Compare the specifications of that version, particularly shot count and suitable ammunition.
• .25 (6.35 mm): offered in selected models. Confirm the exact version, compatible projectile types and ammunition availability.

Calibre alone does not determine trajectory, muzzle energy or accuracy. Pellet weight, shape and velocity, together with suitability for the pistol, also affect performance. Use only ammunition approved by the manufacturer.

What equipment do you need to fill a PCP pistol?

A PCP air pistol requires an external source of high-pressure air. The most suitable option depends on the required fill pressure, reservoir capacity and how often you shoot.

• High-pressure PCP hand pump: allows filling without electricity, but requires physical effort. Check pressure compatibility, connections and air filtration requirements.
• PCP compressor: makes frequent filling easier. Its pressure rating, connections and operating requirements must suit the pistol and the manufacturer's instructions.
• High-pressure air cylinder: requires a suitable filling assembly and adaptor, with enough pressure remaining in the cylinder to transfer air to the pistol's reservoir.

Pellets and maintenance

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning, seal care and storage. Do not apply unapproved lubricants inside the high-pressure system. If you notice a leak or irregular operation, have the pistol inspected by a qualified technician.
