- What type of hunting do you do most often? Driven hunting, stalking, low-light hunting, mountain hunting or a mixture of several styles.

3. Optical quality: when the glass matters more than the numbers
In good daylight, many rifle scopes can produce an apparently clear image. The real differences become easier to see at dawn, at dusk, in mist, against strong backlight or when an animal needs to be identified against dark vegetation.
Image quality depends on the complete optical system: lens design, glass quality, anti-reflective coatings, contrast, colour fidelity, stray-light control and correction of optical aberrations.

4. Reticles and turrets: choose a system you will actually use
The reticle should match the type of hunting you do. For straightforward hunting, a clean and easily visible reticle may be preferable. For stalking and longer distances, additional angular references or ballistic markings can become useful.
The same applies to turrets. Capped turrets are practical for traditional hunting because they help protect the zero from accidental adjustment. Exposed or ballistic turrets are more useful when deliberate elevation corrections are made at different distances.

5. Scope tube diameter does not determine light transmission
A common misconception is that a 30 mm or 34 mm scope tube is automatically brighter than a 25.4 mm or 1-inch tube. Tube diameter does not directly determine the light transmission of a rifle scope.
A larger tube can provide the manufacturer with more internal space for the adjustment mechanism and can allow a greater elevation or windage adjustment range. Actual image quality and low-light performance depend on the complete optical design.

6. Rifle, scope and mounts must work as one system
Choosing the rifle scope is only part of the job. For the optic to work properly on the rifle, there needs to be a good fit between rifle, scope, bases, rings and mounting system.
Before choosing a mount, check the scope tube diameter, the outer diameter of the objective bell, the available mounting length on the tube and the rail or mounting interface fitted to the rifle.
Mounting height is particularly important. The scope should normally sit as low as practical while still leaving sufficient clearance between the objective bell, barrel, action and any moving parts.
The aim is to maintain a natural head position and a consistent cheek weld. If the scope sits too high, the hunter may have to lift the head from the stock to obtain a full sight picture, reducing consistency and comfort.
Longitudinal position matters as well. The scope should be positioned so that the correct eye relief and a full sight picture are obtained naturally when the rifle is mounted to the shoulder. If the head has to move forwards or backwards every time, the scope position is not properly set.

7. How to choose a rifle scope for your hunting style
Driven hunting
For driven hunting, the priorities are a wide field of view, fast target acquisition and a natural, repeatable mount. Low starting magnification and a clearly visible illuminated reticle can be particularly useful.
The relationship between rifle, scope and mounting height is especially important here. A well-positioned scope should allow the hunter to shoulder the rifle and immediately obtain a full sight picture without searching for the eye box.
