Diana spring-piston air rifles

Diana spring-piston air rifles use a mechanical piston system. Cocking the rifle stores energy in the steel spring. When the trigger is released, the spring moves the piston, compressing the air that propels the pellet through the barrel.

The main advantage of this system is independence. It requires no high-pressure pump, air cylinder, compressor or CO₂ capsule, making it suitable for shooters looking for a mechanically self-contained air rifle.

The movement of the piston and the oscillation of the spring create a characteristic two-way firing impulse. A repeatable hold and an airgun-rated scope and mounting system are therefore particularly important.

Diana 54 AirKing and its sliding action

The Diana 54 AirKing is one of the brand’s most distinctive platforms. During the firing cycle, the action moves within the stock to reduce the mechanical reaction transferred to the shooter.

This system does not turn the AirKing into a PCP rifle: it remains a spring-piston air rifle. Its weight, cocking system, hold and scope mounting requirements should therefore be considered together.

Diana PCP air rifles

Diana PCP air rifles store compressed air at high pressure in an onboard reservoir. When fired, a controlled quantity of air propels the pellet without moving a heavy piston inside the action.

This system produces a low firing reaction and supports a stable shooting position. Depending on the model, a Diana PCP may include a multi-shot magazine, pressure gauge, regulator, bolt action or sidelever mechanism.

Diana CO₂ air rifles

Diana CO₂ air rifles use carbon dioxide stored in a capsule or cartridge to propel the pellet. They allow several shots to be fired without breaking the barrel or compressing a spring before each shot.

Models such as the Diana Trailscout CO₂ and different Diana Chaser Rifle Set configurations provide a different shooting experience from spring-piston and PCP rifles. The number of shots available depends on the model, calibre, ambient temperature and rate of fire.

Does Diana manufacture gas-ram air rifles?

Diana has used the N-Tec designation for certain models equipped with a gas ram. In this system, a sealed gas strut replaces the conventional coiled spring. The rifle remains a piston-powered platform and must still be cocked before each shot.

N-Tec availability varies according to model, range and market. The power system should therefore always be confirmed in the specifications of the selected product rather than inferred from the model name.

Which calibre should you choose for a Diana air rifle?

Calibre should be considered alongside the rifle’s actual energy, pellet weight and normal shooting distance. Availability varies according to the model and selected variant.

Diana air rifles in 4.5 mm

4.5 mm pellets are generally lighter and usually provide a flatter trajectory. This calibre is widely used for training, target shooting and plinking.
