Hunting Rangefinders: Measure Distance and Choose the Right Device

A laser rangefinder for hunting measures the distance to game or a landmark. It is particularly useful when stalking, hunting in mountainous terrain or observing open country, where distances can be difficult to judge by eye. How to Choose a Hunting Rangefinder

Do not judge a device by its advertised maximum range alone. Check the manufacturer's figures for different target types and the specifications of the exact model you are considering.

Advertised Range and Real-World Measuring Distance

A large, reflective surface may return a reading at a greater distance than an animal, vegetation or a small landmark. Weather conditions and how steadily the device is held can also affect a measurement. An advertised range of 1,000 or 2,000 metres therefore does not mean that every target can be measured at that distance.

Choose a measuring range that suits the distances you actually encounter, and compare the manufacturer's target-specific figures where available.

Line-of-Sight Distance, Inclinometers and Angle Compensation

Line-of-sight distance is the direct distance between the rangefinder and the target. Where there is a difference in elevation, its horizontal component is shorter. An inclinometer measures the angle; depending on the model, the device may also display horizontal distance or another calculated value.

Features differ between manufacturers and models. Technologies such as ARC from Bushnell and TBR from Leupold should be assessed using the specifications of the individual product. Check whether each display mode shows line-of-sight distance, horizontal distance or another estimate.

Handheld Rangefinder or Rangefinding Binoculars?

A handheld rangefinder is compact and convenient for occasional distance readings. Rangefinding binoculars combine binocular observation and measurement in one device. They can be more comfortable for prolonged observation, although they generally cost more and take up more space.
