PCP hand pumps: compare compatibility, pumping effort and included accessories
A PCP hand pump lets you fill the air reservoir of a pre-charged pneumatic air rifle or air pistol without electricity. It can suit occasional top-ups, modest air requirements or use as a backup to another air source. Start with your reservoir and how you intend to use it: permitted fill pressure, capacity, filling frequency and how comfortable the pump is to operate.
At Carbin, you can compare three-stage and four-stage PCP pumps, including versions with air-drying systems. We explain the differences to help you choose a suitable setup, complete with the connections and accessories you need.
How does a PCP hand pump work? Pistons, chambers and valves
Unlike a conventional tyre pump, a PCP pump is designed to deliver air at high pressure. In a multi-stage design, air passes through several compression chambers. Moving the handle operates the internal piston and tube assembly. Seals maintain the necessary airtightness, while valves control the flow of air.
- Intake: ambient air enters through the intake path specified by the manufacturer.
- Progressive compression: changes in chamber volume increase the air pressure as air passes from one stage to the next.
- Delivery: once the outlet pressure exceeds the reservoir pressure and overcomes the opening resistance of its fill valve, more air enters the reservoir.
- Preventing backflow: non-return valves stop air flowing freely backwards during the pumping cycle.
The exact air path and the work done by each chamber as the handle rises or falls depend on the design. A compression stage is not a pump stroke: stages describe the internal mechanism; pumping cycles are the repeated movements made by the user.
Why the effective piston area matters
As a physical principle, the force produced by a pressure difference depends on the area over which it acts. A small piston area allows high pressure to be reached with a more manageable force, but displaces less air over the same stroke length. Multi-stage pumps combine chambers and effective areas to balance these requirements.
The force you feel at the handle also depends on friction, seals, pressure differences between chambers and the geometry of the mechanism. Pumping effort cannot therefore be judged from the number of stages alone, and not every pump from the same brand will behave in the same way.
3-stage or 4-stage PCP pump: what is the difference?
The three-stage or four-stage description refers to the configuration stated by the manufacturer. An additional stage can change the amount of air displaced and the way the load is distributed. It does not automatically mean fewer strokes, less fatigue or a higher maximum pressure.
| Buying factor | 3-stage pump | 4-stage pump |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Three stages according to the manufacturer's design. | A four-stage configuration; check how the specific model operates. |
| Pumping effort | Depends on pressure, effective areas, friction and ergonomics. | An extra stage alone does not prove that less effort is required. |
| Stroke count | Depends on useful air delivered per cycle and the fill required. | A comparison needs delivery figures or testing under equivalent conditions. |
| Moisture control | May include filters or an air-drying system. | Four compression stages do not replace an air-drying system. |
| Choosing a pump | Compare the complete package and maintenance options. | Check which specific benefit the manufacturer documents over the alternative. |
Some pumps also have selectable operating modes that change the air delivered per cycle and the force required. Do not assume that another model has this feature unless it is stated. Four stages and Dry Pack are different features too: one concerns compression, while the other concerns moisture treatment.
How much effort does it take to fill a PCP with a hand pump?
A small top-up is not the same task as a substantial fill. With the same pump under comparable conditions, the more air you need to add, the more work is required. The final part of a fill, at higher pressure, will generally require more force per movement.
- Final pressure: a higher target pressure can make the last strokes more demanding.
- Reservoir capacity: for the same pressure increase, a larger reservoir needs more air.
- Starting pressure: a top-up needs less air than filling the same reservoir from a much lower pressure.
- Ergonomics: handle height, base stability and stroke length affect your posture.
- Pump condition: seals, lubrication and temperature can affect operation.
For perspective, at approximately constant temperature, a 400 cm³ reservoir needs twice as much air as a 200 cm³ reservoir for the same pressure increase. This does not give an exact fill time or stroke count: actual pump delivery, losses and rest breaks must also be considered.
Use a stable stance and controlled movements in accordance with the manual. Pumping faster does not necessarily mean finishing sooner: heat and fatigue may require extra pauses. If manual pumping is likely to limit your shooting sessions, compare our PCP compressors as well.
Zasdar, Hill and Hatsan PCP hand pumps compared
The following models offer different configurations. This table compares equipment and buying considerations. It is not a ranking of pumping effort, as we do not have a comparative test of all models under identical conditions.
| Model | What sets it apart | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Zasdar 3-stage PCP hand pump | Three-stage compression; the product description lists a hose, filter and quick connector. | Exact version, permitted working pressure and included moisture-control equipment. |
| Zasdar 3-stage PCP hand pump with Dry Pack | Version with Dry Pack included, plus hose and fittings. | Replacement desiccant availability and compatibility with your PCP's fill connection. |
| Zasdar 4-stage PCP hand pump | Four-stage alternative with hose, filter and quick connector. | Supplied version and the filter's function; do not automatically equate a filter with a Dry Pack. |
| Hill MK5 | Pump range with maintenance documentation and dedicated spare parts. | Required adaptor and the contents of this version; do not assume Dry-Pac is included. |
| Hill MK5 with Dry-Pac | Version including the Dry-Pac system to reduce moisture in the intake air. | Desiccant, replacement options and the exact pump and kit references. |
| Hatsan PCP hand pump | The brand's manual filling option for compatible equipment. | The version's maximum pressure and required fill probe or adaptor; check optional accessories separately. |
How to choose between these brands
Zasdar offers three-stage, four-stage and Dry Pack configurations to compare. Hill is worth considering if you value maintenance documentation and the option of a package with Dry-Pac. Hatsan provides another choice whose pressure rating and connection must suit your equipment.
Your pump and air rifle do not necessarily need to be the same brand. If you are putting a setup together, explore our categories for Gamo PCP air rifles, Cometa PCP air rifles, BSA PCP air rifles and Hatsan PCP air rifles. Reservoirs, connections and versions can differ within a single brand, so always check the specific model before choosing a pump.
Filters, Dry Pack and fill connections: what should your setup include?
A particle filter, a condensate separator and a desiccant cartridge perform different jobs. Check what the pump includes and how it needs to be maintained. A Dry Pack uses a material that removes moisture from the air and has a limited capacity. Replace it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Also check the fitting on the high-pressure hose and the fill port on your PCP. You may need a compatible quick coupling or a model-specific fill probe. A 1/8-inch thread size alone does not identify the thread standard: BSP and NPT threads must not be treated as interchangeable. To complete your connections, see our PCP accessories.
Your hand pump as part of a complete PCP setup
If you are still choosing an air rifle, compare our PCP air rifles with their reservoirs and filling requirements in mind. You can also explore PCP air pistols: the same pressure and connection checks apply. Our main air rifles category lets you compare other power systems too.

Frequently asked questions about PCP hand pumps
Which PCP pump do I need for my air rifle or air pistol?
The pump must be rated for the required fill pressure and connect using suitable fittings. Then compare reservoir capacity, frequency of use, ergonomics, filtration and spare parts availability.
Is a 4-stage PCP pump better than a 3-stage pump?
Not necessarily. Compare specific models and the equipment included. The number of stages alone does not establish lower effort, faster filling or a longer service life.
Does four stages mean four separate pistons?
You cannot assume this without checking the design. Stages or compression assemblies may share tubes, piston rods and their operating mechanism. They are not necessarily four separate pistons arranged like those in an engine.
Does a 4-stage pump need fewer strokes?
You need comparable figures for air delivered per cycle to establish that. Reservoir capacity and starting and finishing pressures also matter. The number of stages does not translate into a fixed reduction in stroke count.
How many strokes does it take to reach 200 bar?
There is no universal figure. Filling a small reservoir from 150 to 200 bar requires a different amount of air from filling a larger one from 80 to 200 bar. The pump model also affects the result.
Why does pumping get harder towards the end of a fill?
The pump must overcome increasing back pressure to deliver more air. A gradual increase in resistance is normal. However, jamming, a sudden change or unusual spring-back of the handle means you should stop and check the equipment according to its manual.
Can someone with limited physical strength use a PCP hand pump?
It depends on the person, the pump's ergonomics and the pressure required. There is no minimum body weight that applies to every pump. If you cannot complete the movement in a stable, controlled way, consider another filling method.
Can I fill any PCP to 300 bar with a 300-bar pump?
No. The reservoir's limit may be lower. The pump's maximum pressure describes its permitted capability, not the correct fill pressure for every PCP.
Are a Dry Pack and a hose filter the same thing?
Not necessarily. Dry Pack usually refers to a system using desiccant. A hose filter may perform another function, so check what it removes and which consumables it uses.
Can one PCP pump be used with different calibres?
Calibre does not determine the fill connection. One pump can suit several calibres if the pressure rating and connections are compatible. Pumping effort depends on the air needed for the fill, not directly on pellet diameter.
Can I use a bicycle pump instead?
A bicycle pump is not a substitute for a PCP hand pump. You need equipment specifically designed and rated for the reservoir's filling pressures.
Should I empty the reservoir before refilling it?
Do not deliberately empty it before each refill. Follow the manufacturer's filling and storage instructions. A completely empty reservoir may require a specific procedure.
Why does the hand pump get hot?
Compression and friction generate heat. Follow the rest periods in the manual and allow the pump to cool when necessary. Pumping faster can increase heat build-up.
What maintenance does a PCP hand pump need?
Follow the requirements for the specific model: cleaning, seal checks, consumable replacement and approved lubrication. Do not add household oils or unapproved products. Depressurise the relevant part of the system before any maintenance.
Why is my PCP pump not building pressure?
Possible causes include leaks or problems with seals, the bleed system or valves. The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Stop using the pump and follow the checks in its manual or contact the service team.
Can I fill an external air cylinder with a hand pump?
Reaching the required pressure is not enough to confirm suitability. The manufacturer must approve that use. The volume of an external cylinder can also make manual filling very impractical.
When is a PCP compressor worth considering?
When filling frequency, reservoir size or physical effort makes a hand pump inconvenient. A compatible hand pump may meet occasional needs; for frequent filling, compare the total cost and maintenance of both options.
