Ballistic Converters for Air Rifles and Spanish Legislation: Everything You Need to Know
.Are you passionate about air rifles and want to better understand the technical, legal and practical features you need to know? In this article we offer you a clear guide, with simple explanations and practical tools such as our built-in ballistic converters.
Spanish Compressed Air Rifle Legislation
In Spain, the legislation on compressed air carbines is mainly regulated by the kinetic energy that the projectile transmits, measured in joules (J):
-
Up to 24.2 joules (17.9 ft-lb):
4th category weapons. They can be acquired by being of legal age (18 years old) simply on presentation of an ID card, without the need for a licence, but they must be registered at the corresponding town hall. -
More than 24.2 joules:
The weapon is now considered 3rd category, legally equated to firearms, and therefore require a type E firearms licence issued by the Guardia Civil.
In addition, you should also bear in mind:
- Porting them on public roads always requires documentation and a closed holster.
- Use must be restricted to authorised places (shooting galleries, hunting grounds, private properties...).
What does the "F" inside a pentagon mean?
.This small symbol that you can find engraved on many air rifles (especially European ones) is key to the German market, but it also has relevance in Spain:
Important: even if it is marked "F", in Spain you must always respect the registration of airguns in your local town hall.
How many Joules are optimal for gallery shooting?
.If your aim is to enjoy shooting at targets in an enclosed shooting gallery or at short distances, the recommended joules are:
Recommended range.
Recommended range
- Between 6 and 12 joules.
Advantages of this power range
- Between 6 and 12 joules.
- Allows controlled precision.
- Avoiding the need for precision.
- Avoids overpenetration (going through targets or shielding unnecessarily)
.- Reduces wear and tear of the material
and of the weapon itself.
The 7.5 joule carbines (F-approved) are ideal for this use.
What Power is Recommended for Field Target?
The Field Target is a high-precision sporting sport, where metal silhouettes are shot at distances of 10 to 50 metres. Here, the energy ideally used is:
Recommended range.
Recommended range
- Between 15 and 20 joules.
Why this power
?- It allows a tight shot (less ballistic drop of the projectile).
- Maintains a safe impact on the tilting metallic silhouettes.
- Offers optimal recoil control and greater sensitivity when firing.
In official competitions, such as those of the World Field Target Federation, the maximum allowable limit is 16.3 joules (12 ft-lb) in the most technical category.
- Use our Optional Field Target Conversions in the most technical category.
