For stalking, hill country and long walks, look for stretch fabric, articulated knees and low weight. Good breathability helps move moisture away from the body when the pace and effort increase.

Demanding ground

Reinforcement and resistance

In brambles, scrub and dense cover, robust panels across the front, knees and lower legs help resist abrasion. A water-repellent finish is useful in damp vegetation, but it does not replace a waterproof membrane.

For prolonged rain, membrane performance, seams and zips matter. When sitting or standing for long periods in cold weather, allow room for a base layer and insulation: waterproof does not necessarily mean warm.

Waterproof, water repellent or thorn resistant?

Waterproof trousers use a construction designed to limit water penetration under specified conditions. Hydrostatic head, measured in millimetres, helps compare membrane resistance; breathability is commonly expressed in g/m²/24 h. Seams, zips, fit and movement also affect real-world performance.

A water-repellent treatment helps with dew, wet grass and light rain, but does not always provide the same lasting barrier. Thorn-resistant trousers focus on mechanical protection through tougher fabrics and reinforced panels. A pair can be both waterproof and thorn resistant, but one feature does not guarantee the other.

Maximum protection is not always the best solution

Extra reinforcement, a membrane and insulation can add weight and reduce airflow. For active hunting in dry weather, lightweight stretch trousers may be more comfortable. Choose heavier protection when rain, low temperatures or aggressive vegetation genuinely require it.
