Not every HART jacket provides the same protection. A windproof jacket, softshell, waterproof shell and insulated layer solve different problems. Check the individual model specification and choose according to exertion, exposure and your layering system.

How to choose a HART hunting jacket

Active hunting

Movement and moisture control

For stalking, hill country and long walks, look for stretch fabric, articulated patterning and ventilation. A jacket that is too heavy can trap moisture and restrict movement, even if it feels protective while standing still.

Reinforcement and practical storage

For beaters, dense woodland and demanding field use, examine the outer fabric, shoulders, elbows and pocket layout. A rear game pocket or radio compartment can be particularly useful depending on the discipline.

For prolonged rain, the membrane, seams, zips and hood become critical. In cold conditions, also consider insulation and space for other layers: waterproof performance and thermal protection are not the same thing.

Waterproof, windproof, softshell or insulated?

A waterproof jacket uses a construction intended to limit water penetration under specified conditions. Hydrostatic head helps compare membrane resistance, while breathability is commonly expressed in g/m²/24 h. Seams, zips, hood, cuffs and fit also influence performance in real use.

A windproof jacket reduces heat loss caused by moving air but may not withstand continuous rain. A softshell usually combines stretch, moderate protection and comfort for active hunting. An insulated jacket is designed primarily to retain warmth and may work as a mid-layer or outer layer depending on its construction.

More insulation does not always mean more comfort

On a climb or during strenuous stalking, excess insulation can cause sweating followed by rapid cooling. Match the system to the effort: a moisture-managing base layer, insulation when needed and an outer layer selected for wind or rain.

Size, fit and freedom of movement

Measure your chest, waist and arm length, then compare them with the model’s size guide.
Raise your arms, mount the gun and rotate your torso to check mobility.
Allow for the layers you expect to wear underneath during winter.
Avoid excessive looseness, which can cause noise and snagging, as well as a fit that pulls across the shoulders or back.
Check the collar, cuffs, hem and hood while wearing gloves and field equipment.

For a female-specific fit, choose a model designed around that body shape rather than relying on a direct size conversion.

Technologies used in HART jackets

Depending on the model, HART uses Osmotech or Osmotech Plus for waterproof, breathable protection, Windtech for wind resistance, X-Tretch Dynamic for movement, Graph-X in high-wear areas, H-Air for ventilation and HDI for thermal insulation. None of these technologies is automatically present in every jacket.

Caring for a technical HART jacket

Always follow the care label. Empty pockets, close zips and hook-and-loop fasteners, and avoid fabric softeners or unsuitable detergents that may affect membranes and finishes. Dry the garment as instructed and regularly inspect seams, cuffs, closures and reinforced areas.

I had the pleasure of purchasing the 150th Anniversary Edition Cometa 400 Fenix at the lowest price I could find online from these kind people.
