Definitive Guide to Hunting Scope Mounts and Rings

Learn which rifle scope mount you need: BH height, rings, Picatinny vs Weaver, Swarovski SR, ZEISS rail, Tikka, CZ and tube compatibility.

Rifle Scope Mounts and Rings: Guide to Compatibility, Height and Rails

Choosing the correct rifle scope mounts and rings is just as important as choosing the scope itself. An unsuitable mount can create compatibility problems, place the scope unnecessarily high, compromise a natural shooting position or even prevent the optic from being fitted correctly to the rifle.

The right question is therefore not simply “which scope mount is best?”, but which mount is compatible with this particular rifle and this particular scope?

To answer that properly, the complete system has to be considered: rifle + rifle interface + mount + scope interface + mounting height + shooter.

If you already know the specifications of your rifle and optic, browse our range of rifle scope mounts, rings and bases. If you are still choosing the optic itself, you can also compare our hunting rifle scopes.

What scope mount do I need for my rifle?

Before buying a mount, two different questions need to be answered:

  • What mounting interface does the rifle have?
  • What mounting interface does the scope require?

On the rifle we may find a Picatinny rail, Weaver bases, a dovetail, dedicated bases screwed directly to the action or a manufacturer-specific mounting interface.

On the scope we may find a conventional 1-inch, 30 mm or 34 mm main tube, but some optics use an integrated mounting rail instead, such as certain Swarovski SR or ZEISS rail models.

The mount therefore has to be compatible with the rifle underneath and with the scope above.

What does BH mean on a scope mount?

The abbreviation BH is commonly found on European scope mounts and rings and refers to a mounting-height measurement.

There is one important point: not every manufacturer measures BH from exactly the same reference point.

Depending on the manufacturer and mounting system, the measurement may refer to the distance from the mounting surface to the underside of the scope tube, to a defined mounting plane or to another specified reference point.

A BH10 mount from one manufacturer should therefore not automatically be assumed to have exactly the same effective height as a BH10 mount from another.

Before choosing the height, check:

  • how the manufacturer defines its BH measurement;
  • the scope main-tube diameter;
  • the actual external diameter of the objective bell;
  • the height of the base or rail already fitted to the rifle;
  • clearance around the barrel, bolt handle and open sights;
  • the final cheek position and shooting ergonomics.

Systems such as APEL EAW scope mounts are available in different heights and configurations, making it possible to match the geometry of the mount much more precisely to the rifle and scope.

How do I choose the correct scope ring height?

The correct ring height is not simply the height that leaves the largest possible gap between the scope and the barrel. For most hunting rifles, the aim is to position the scope as low as is mechanically practical while maintaining a natural shooting position.

Four measurements are particularly important:

  1. Main-tube diameter: for example 25.4 mm, 30 mm or 34 mm.
  2. Actual outside diameter of the objective bell: not simply the nominal objective size.
  3. Height of the base or rail: the base itself already raises the optic above the receiver.
  4. Available clearance on the rifle: the barrel, action, bolt handle and open sights can all affect the required height.

A 3-18x56 scope has a 56 mm objective lens, but the outside diameter of the objective housing is larger than 56 mm. It is this external dimension that matters when working out whether the scope will clear the rifle.

Should a rifle scope always be mounted as low as possible?

An unnecessarily high mount is normally best avoided, but mechanical clearance is only part of the equation. The final position must also be comfortable and repeatable.

If the scope sits too high, the shooter may have to lift their head away from the stock, reducing the consistency of the cheek weld. If it sits too low, the objective bell, bolt handle or other parts of the rifle may interfere with the optic.

The correct height is therefore a balance between mechanical compatibility and shooting ergonomics.

Scope tube diameter: 1 inch, 30 mm, 34 mm and other sizes

When a scope uses a conventional main tube, the rings must match its diameter exactly.

Scope tube Required rings
1 inch / 25.4 mm 1-inch rings
30 mm 30 mm rings
34 mm 34 mm rings
35 / 36 mm Rings made for the exact corresponding diameter

A 30 mm ring cannot be used for a 34 mm scope tube. Differences should never be compensated for by excessive tightening, improvised shims or modification of the rings.

Weaver vs Picatinny: what is the difference?

Weaver and Picatinny rails look very similar because both use transverse slots, but they are not identical systems.

A Picatinny rail uses standardised slot dimensions and spacing. A Weaver system also uses cross-slots, but their dimensions and spacing may vary depending on the base.

Feature Weaver Picatinny
Cross-slots Yes Yes
Slot spacing Can vary Standardised
Accessory compatibility Depends on the individual design Very broad
Common use Traditional hunting bases and mounts Modern rifles, optics and accessories

Many Weaver-style rings can be fitted to a Picatinny rail. That does not mean that every Picatinny component will fit every Weaver base.

If a manufacturer states that a particular mount is compatible with both Picatinny and Weaver, it can be used accordingly. If that compatibility is not specified, check the individual product before purchasing.

For different rail systems and tube diameters, see our ranges of Warne scope mounts, APEL EAW mounts and Optik Arms mounts.

The rifle rail and the scope rail are not the same thing

This distinction is responsible for many mounting mistakes.

The rifle rail or base is the interface to which the mount is attached.

A scope rail, by contrast, refers to an integrated mounting interface built into certain scopes instead of using conventional rings around the main tube.

Common mounting interfaces on the rifle

  • Picatinny rail;
  • Weaver base;
  • dovetail rail;
  • dedicated two-piece bases;
  • manufacturer-specific mounting interfaces.

Common mounting interfaces on the scope

  • 1-inch main tube;
  • 30 mm main tube;
  • 34 mm main tube;
  • other specialist tube diameters;
  • Swarovski SR rail;
  • ZEISS rail on compatible models.

The scope mount is the component that connects these two interfaces.

Swarovski SR: does it need scope rings?

A Swarovski scope fitted with an SR rail has an integrated mounting interface beneath the optic.

It therefore does not use conventional scope rings clamped around the main tube. Instead, it requires a mount that is compatible with the Swarovski SR interface and, at the same time, with the mounting system on the rifle.

The correct sequence is:

rifle → rifle interface → compatible mount → Swarovski SR

This is why it is not enough to say “I need a mount for a Swarovski”. The exact Swarovski model and the rifle interface must both be identified.

ZEISS rail vs ZEISS scope tube: what is the difference?

ZEISS rifle scopes are available in both conventional main-tube versions and models with an integrated mounting rail.

A conventional tube requires rings of the correct diameter.

A rail-mounted version requires a mount specifically compatible with the rail and with the rifle.

Therefore, simply saying “I have a ZEISS scope” is not enough to select the correct mount. We need to know the exact scope model and whether it uses a tube or an integrated rail.

What scope mount do I need for a Tikka?

With a Tikka rifle, the first step is to identify the exact model and its current mounting configuration.

A mount should not be purchased simply because it is described as “for Tikka”. Different Tikka models and variants may use different arrangements or may already have a rail fitted.

Before choosing the mount, check:

  • exact Tikka model;
  • action and rifle configuration;
  • existing rail or mounting base;
  • scope make and model;
  • main-tube diameter or scope rail;
  • required mounting height.

Manufacturers such as Warne produce dedicated bases and mounting solutions for a wide range of rifle actions, including Tikka configurations.

What scope mount do I need for a CZ?

The same principle applies to CZ rifles: the exact model matters.

It is a mistake to assume that every CZ rifle uses the same dovetail width, rail or mounting interface.

Families such as the CZ 457 and CZ 600 should be treated as different platforms when selecting bases and rings.

Always identify the exact rifle and its actual mounting interface before choosing the mount.

Brands such as Optik Arms offer model-specific rails and bases for CZ and other rifle platforms.

Two-piece scope rings or a one-piece mount?

Once compatibility with the rifle and scope has been established, you can choose between separate rings and a one-piece mount.

Feature Two-piece rings One-piece mount
Positioning flexibility High Depends on the design
Weight Can be lower Varies by design
Rigidity Very high with quality rings Very high
Construction Two independent mounting points Single integrated unit
Typical use Hunting and general-purpose rifles Configurations where additional system rigidity is desirable

A one-piece mount is not automatically better. High-quality rings that are correctly installed can provide an excellent solution for a hunting rifle.

You can compare different configurations in our Warne scope mounts and rings range.

Fixed or detachable scope mounts?

A fixed mount is a straightforward solution when the scope is intended to remain permanently on the rifle.

Detachable or Quick Release (QR) systems are useful when the optic needs to be removed regularly, when more than one optic is used on the same rifle or when access to another sighting system is required.

With any detachable system, one of the most important characteristics is repeatability when the optic is removed and refitted.

Different solutions are available from APEL EAW, Warne and Leupold.

Steel or aluminium scope mounts?

There is no universal answer.

Steel allows manufacturers to produce extremely robust mounting systems, although it normally adds more weight.

High-quality aluminium can provide an excellent combination of low weight and rigidity when the material, design and machining are appropriate.

The decision should take into account:

  • scope weight;
  • rifle type;
  • recoil;
  • mounting interface;
  • desired overall rifle weight;
  • design and manufacturing quality of the mount.

For a lightweight stalking or mountain rifle, a well-designed aluminium mount may be more appropriate than a considerably heavier steel system.

What is the difference between a 0 MOA and 20 MOA rail?

A 0 MOA base or rail does not introduce additional inclination intended to increase the scope's usable elevation range.

An inclined base, such as a 20 MOA rail, angles the scope relative to the rifle so that more of the scope's internal elevation adjustment can be used for longer distances.

This does not mean that a 20 MOA base is automatically better.

For a hunting rifle used primarily at conventional hunting distances, a 0 MOA configuration may be entirely appropriate. An inclined rail becomes more relevant when additional elevation adjustment is genuinely required.

Eye relief: why the longitudinal position of the scope matters

Eye relief is the distance between the shooter's eye and the ocular lens at which the full field of view is obtained.

Before the rings are finally tightened, the rifle should be shouldered naturally and the scope moved forwards or backwards until the full image is visible without consciously moving the head.

A mount can be mechanically compatible but still be ergonomically unsuitable if it does not allow sufficient fore-and-aft movement to position the optic correctly.

The complete relationship should be natural:

stock → cheek weld → eye → ocular lens → scope

How do I know whether the objective bell will clear the rifle?

Do not calculate this using only the number in the scope's model name.

A 3-18x56 scope has a 56 mm objective lens, but the external housing around that lens will have a larger diameter.

You therefore need the actual outside diameter of the objective bell.

That measurement must then be considered together with:

  • ring height;
  • base or rail height;
  • scope tube diameter;
  • barrel profile;
  • open sights, if present;
  • bolt-handle clearance;
  • the final ergonomic position of the scope.

What mount do I need for an Aimpoint red dot sight?

A red dot sight should not automatically be treated like a conventional tube-mounted rifle scope.

Different Aimpoint models may require different mounting interfaces, adapters or bases.

For example, some Aimpoint Micro mounts are designed to interface directly with Weaver and Picatinny rails. The exact Aimpoint model and the rifle interface therefore need to be checked before choosing the mount.

If you are comparing different sighting systems, our main optics range also includes rifle scopes and red dot solutions for different hunting applications.

Which scope mount brand should I choose?

The manufacturer should be chosen after compatibility has been established, not before.

The correct sequence is:

rifle → interface → scope → mounting height → mount type → manufacturer

Scope mount torque: always follow the manufacturer's specification

There is no universal torque value that applies to every scope mount and every set of rings.

The correct torque can vary according to the manufacturer, mount design, screw diameter, thread, material and the specific part being tightened.

It is also important to distinguish between:

  • ring-cap screws;
  • mount-to-base screws;
  • cross-bolts;
  • base-to-action screws;
  • components used in detachable mounting systems.

The correct rule is simple: use a torque wrench and follow the specification supplied by the manufacturer for that exact product.

Should I use threadlocker on scope mount screws?

Threadlocker should not automatically be applied to every screw in a scope mounting system.

Some manufacturers permit or recommend it at particular attachment points, while others specify dry threads or a different installation procedure.

This is especially important for the screws that clamp the rings around the scope tube. Always follow the instructions for the specific rings or mount being installed.

Do scope rings need to be lapped?

Ring lapping has traditionally been used to improve contact between some scope rings and the scope tube.

With modern precision-machined mounting systems, however, it should not be assumed that lapping is always necessary.

Some rings do not require it, and altering their geometry can even be counterproductive.

If there appears to be an alignment or contact problem, check the bases, rings and installation first before removing material from any component.

How to mount a rifle scope correctly

  1. Identify the rifle and its mounting interface.
  2. Check the scope: main-tube diameter or integrated rail.
  3. Determine the required mounting height from the objective, base, rifle and ergonomics.
  4. Install the base or mount according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Place the scope in position without fully tightening the rings.
  6. Set the eye relief from a natural shooting position.
  7. Level the scope and reticle.
  8. Check bolt-handle movement and all possible points of interference.
  9. Tighten progressively using the sequence and torque specified by the manufacturer.
  10. Confirm zero after the installation has been completed.

You can also read our guide to choosing the right scope mount for further information on tube diameter, rail type and mounting height.

Common mistakes when choosing rifle scope mounts and rings

  • Choosing by brand without checking compatibility first.
  • Confusing objective-lens diameter with the outside diameter of the objective bell.
  • Failing to check the scope tube diameter.
  • Treating Weaver and Picatinny as identical systems.
  • Confusing the rifle rail with an integrated scope rail.
  • Buying a Tikka or CZ mount without identifying the exact rifle model.
  • Choosing an unnecessarily high mount simply to guarantee objective clearance.
  • Failing to check bolt-handle clearance.
  • Ignoring eye relief and natural cheek position.
  • Using generic torque figures instead of the manufacturer's specifications.

Checklist: what information do I need to choose the right scope mount?

To determine the correct mount accurately, collect these six pieces of information:

  1. Make and exact model of the rifle.
  2. Type of base or rail already fitted.
  3. Make and exact model of the scope.
  4. Main-tube diameter or integrated scope-rail system.
  5. Actual outside diameter of the objective bell.
  6. Main use: driven hunting, stalking, high-seat hunting or longer-range shooting.

With these details, it becomes much easier to determine which mounting system is compatible and what mounting height is required.

Conclusion: the right mount connects the rifle, scope and shooter

A rifle scope mount should never be chosen in isolation. It is the component that allows the rifle and optic to function as one complete system.

Before buying, check rifle compatibility, scope interface, main-tube diameter, BH or mounting height, objective-bell clearance, ergonomics and intended use.

Brand and material come afterwards.

The correct sequence is:

rifle → base or rail → mount → scope → mounting height → shooter.
