FX Airguns PCP Air Rifles: Technology, Accuracy and Adjustability

FX Airguns PCP air rifles are among the most technologically advanced platforms in the pre-charged pneumatic airgun market. The Swedish manufacturer develops systems in which the barrel, liners, regulator, plenum, valve, air reservoir and different adjustment systems work together to adapt the rifle to different calibres, projectiles and shooting disciplines.

FX Airguns is particularly renowned for its philosophy of modularity and tuning. On many FX platforms, the objective is not simply to achieve maximum power. Instead, different parameters can be balanced to optimise velocity, air consumption, consistency and accuracy.

To compare FX with other manufacturers and technologies, visit our main range of PCP air rifles.

What Makes FX Airguns Different?

FX Airguns has developed a wide range of proprietary solutions for air management, regulation and barrel technology. Depending on the platform and generation, FX rifles may feature:

  • Smooth Twist and STX barrel systems.
  • Interchangeable liners for different configurations.
  • Superior Liners and other liner variants for different projectiles.
  • Pressure regulators controlling the pressure available before each shot.
  • Power Plenums and regulated air chambers of different capacities.
  • Quick Tune systems and additional adjustment options depending on the platform.
  • Configurations for pellets and slugs.
  • Multishot systems with rotary magazines.
  • Carbon-fibre bottles and different air-reservoir architectures.
  • Bullpup, tactical and traditionally styled platforms.

This level of adjustability is one of the defining characteristics of FX. The objective is not necessarily to obtain the highest possible muzzle velocity, but to correctly balance the air rifle, calibre, barrel, pressure and ammunition.

FX STX Technology and Interchangeable Liners

One of the most distinctive elements of FX Airguns is the development of its Smooth Twist and STX barrel systems. On certain platforms, an internal liner forms part of the barrel assembly and can be replaced to suit different configurations.

The FX Maverick, for example, uses the STX Changeable Liner System and can be equipped with a Superior Liner. This approach allows FX to develop different liner options for different projectile types and shooting requirements.

It is important to distinguish between changing a liner and changing calibre. They are not necessarily the same operation. On certain FX platforms, a liner can be replaced while retaining the same calibre, whereas a complete calibre conversion may also require a different barrel, pellet probe or other compatible components.

This concept continues to evolve on newer FX platforms. The FX DRS MKII, for example, introduces changes to the barrel assembly and liner access compared with the previous DRS generation.

FX Power Plenum: What Is It and What Does It Do?

The Power Plenum is a chamber containing a volume of regulated air ready for the next shot. It forms part of a wider pneumatic system involving the regulator, valve, airflow, hammer mechanism and barrel.

The Power Plenum should therefore not simply be understood as a system designed to increase power. A larger available air volume provides greater configuration potential, but the final performance also depends on calibre, barrel length, regulated pressure and the projectile being used.

The FX Impact M4 uses the 75 cc Power Plenum 750 together with the FX Power Block, providing substantial regulated air capacity and optimised airflow.

FX Regulators: Controlled Pressure and Shot-to-Shot Consistency

The regulator in a PCP air rifle controls the pressure available in the regulated chamber before each shot. Stable pressure helps make the operating conditions as repeatable as possible from one shot to the next.

FX uses different regulation architectures across its platforms. The FX Maverick, for example, is particularly well known for its dual-regulator system, with two regulators operating in sequence before the plenum. Current platforms such as the Impact M4 use further developments of FX regulator technology.

It is important to understand that higher regulator pressure does not automatically produce better results. The appropriate pressure depends on calibre, barrel length, ammunition, desired velocity and the overall setup of the rifle.

To measure these differences objectively, a ballistic chronograph is particularly useful. It allows projectile velocity to be measured and the consistency of a shot string to be analysed.

FX Airguns for Pellets and Slugs

As precision PCP air rifles have evolved, slugs have become increasingly popular alongside traditional diabolo pellets. FX has developed a variety of platforms, liners and configurations capable of working with different projectile types.

Platforms such as the Maverick include configurations designed for pellets and slugs. Simply using a heavier projectile, however, does not guarantee better groups.

Two slugs of the same calibre can differ significantly in weight, diameter, length and geometry. Testing different projectiles is therefore important in order to identify the ammunition that performs best with a particular barrel, liner and rifle setup.

Main FX Airguns PCP Air Rifle Platforms

FX Impact M4

The FX Impact is probably the most recognisable platform in the FX Airguns range. Its compact architecture integrates the air bottle, regulator, plenum, magazine and multiple adjustment systems into a highly modular platform.

The Impact M4 develops the concept further with features including the Quick Set Trigger, increased chassis rigidity, updated regulator technology, new high-capacity magazines and the Power Plenum 750.

The Impact is particularly suited to shooters who want to work with different calibres, projectiles and setups while remaining within a single modular platform.

FX Maverick

The FX Maverick is a compact PCP platform particularly notable for its dual-regulator system, large plenum and STX barrel system with interchangeable liner.

Depending on the version, it can support different calibres and configurations for pellets or slugs, together with several tuning options.

FX Panthera

The FX Panthera was developed with a strong focus on precision shooting and slug-oriented configurations. Its architecture differs significantly from traditional FX bullpup platforms and is designed particularly for precision shooting disciplines.

FX Dynamic

The FX Dynamic follows a similarly precision-focused and configurable philosophy. Depending on the version, different air reservoirs, barrel lengths and configurations are available.

FX DRS and DRS MKII

The FX DRS family uses a very different architecture from FX rifles with a clearly visible external bottle. Its air reservoir is integrated around the barrel assembly, creating a slimmer and more traditional rifle profile.

The DRS MKII introduces further changes to the top rail, plenum and barrel system, together with revised access to the liner.

FX also offers DRS configurations with different stocks, including GRS stock options featuring adjustable cheek pieces and butt pads for improved shooter fit and precision-oriented ergonomics.

FX Airgun Bottles and Air Capacity

FX uses different systems for storing compressed air depending on the platform. Some models use carbon-fibre air bottles, while others, such as the DRS family, use an integrated reservoir architecture.

A larger bottle stores more air, although actual shot count also depends on calibre, regulator pressure, power setting, barrel length and the ammunition being used.

How Do You Fill an FX Airguns PCP Air Rifle?

FX PCP air rifles require an external high-pressure air source to fill their reservoir. The most suitable filling system depends on frequency of use, reservoir size and where the rifle is normally filled.

PCP Filling Bottle

A high-pressure filling bottle allows several fast refills without requiring electricity and is particularly convenient for longer shooting sessions. Always use hoses, fittings and adapters designed for the relevant working pressure.

PCP Hand Pump

A hand pump provides a completely independent filling solution. The physical effort required, however, increases as reservoir capacity and filling pressure rise.

PCP Compressor

For regular shooters or PCP rifles with larger air reservoirs, a PCP compressor can make filling considerably easier.

Before filling any PCP rifle, always check the manufacturer's specified maximum filling pressure and use only compatible high-pressure fittings.

Ballistic Chronographs and Velocity Measurement for FX Airguns

A chronograph is one of the most useful measuring tools for an adjustable FX PCP rifle. It measures actual projectile velocity and makes it possible to compare different ammunition or configurations objectively.

A shot string can be used to analyse:

  • Average velocity.
  • Shot-to-shot variation.
  • Consistency across a string.
  • Performance of different pellets or slugs.
  • The effect of different manufacturer-supported configurations.

At Carbin you can find ballistic chronographs and velocity measuring devices, including FX Airguns chronographs.

Scopes and Mounts for FX Airguns

A precision PCP air rifle should be paired with an optic suited to the shooting discipline and distance involved. The requirements for short-range shooting are different from those of a rifle configured for precision shooting at extended distances.

Factors worth considering include magnification range, objective diameter, reticle, parallax adjustment, turret design and the rail system fitted to the rifle.

Explore our range of rifle scopes and scope mounts, rings and mounting systems.

FX Accuracy Depends on the Complete Setup

The accuracy of an FX Airguns PCP rifle does not depend on a single component. Final performance results from the interaction of several factors:

  • Barrel quality and configuration.
  • Liner type.
  • Calibre.
  • Regulated pressure.
  • Plenum volume.
  • Airflow management.
  • Ammunition.
  • Pellet or slug weight and geometry.
  • Scope and mounts.
  • Environmental conditions.
  • Shooting technique.

For this reason, the highest velocity or heaviest projectile does not automatically produce the best groups. One of the main strengths of FX is precisely the ability to balance several parameters within the same platform.
