How to Choose the Correct Scope Ring Height

The correct height ensures the objective bell clears the barrel, receiver and any iron sights. The riflescope should not be mounted higher than necessary, as a lower and properly fitted setup generally supports a more natural cheek weld and shooting position.

Check the actual outer diameter of the objective bell, barrel profile, base or rail height and stock ergonomics. Low, medium and high are not universal measurements between mounting systems, so always compare the published dimensions for the exact reference.

Installation: Stability and Safety

A quality mount needs correct installation. Always work with an unloaded rifle, use suitable tools and follow Leupold’s specified torque values. Excessive torque can damage the scope tube, while insufficient torque can allow unwanted movement.

1. Confirm that the base, rings and optic are compatible.
2. Clean the contact surfaces before installation.
3. Fit the correct mounting base to the rifle.
4. Position the scope rings without fully tightening them.
5. Set eye relief and level the reticle.
6. Tighten screws progressively and evenly to the manufacturer’s specification.
7. Check clearance and then zero the rifle.

After changing bases, rings or riflescope, check the fasteners again and confirm the rifle’s zero. The mount is a key part of the complete setup, but it does not replace this verification.
