Which calibre should you choose for a spring air rifle?

.177 calibre (4.5 mm)

.177 calibre is the most widely used option for target practice, recreational shooting and learning basic technique. Its relatively light pellets generally provide a flatter trajectory and a broad choice of ammunition.

.22 calibre (5.5 mm)

Understanding power and muzzle velocity

A high muzzle velocity does not automatically produce better accuracy. Actual velocity depends on the calibre, pellet weight, muzzle energy, condition of the seals and the design of the air rifle.

Very light pellets can produce impressive velocity figures, but they do not necessarily provide the most consistent groups. In practical use, stable power delivery, suitable ammunition and repeatable shooting technique are more important than a single maximum velocity figure.

Are spring air rifles suitable for beginners?

A spring air rifle can be an excellent choice for a beginner, provided that its weight, stock dimensions and cocking effort suit the user. It teaches the essential processes of cocking, loading, aiming and controlling the trigger without requiring separate charging equipment.

Which scope is suitable for a spring air rifle?

A spring air rifle requires an airgun-rated or spring-rated scope designed to withstand its particular recoil cycle. The movement of the piston produces forces that can damage an optic intended only for recoil-free airguns or a different type of shooting platform.

For short and medium distances, fixed 4×32 scopes and variable models such as 3-9×40 or 4-12×40 can provide a practical balance of magnification, field of view and weight. Spring-rating, optical quality, parallax adjustment and mounting security are more important than choosing unnecessarily high magnification.
