Spring-piston and gas-ram air rifles place different demands on scopes and mounts from PCP rifles. Their firing cycle generates movement and vibration that must be considered when selecting the optic. A spring-piston air rifle can be particularly demanding because of its characteristic two-way recoil impulse.

A scope should not be considered compatible simply because it fits the rifle’s rail. The scope and mounting system must also be suitable for the mechanical stresses produced by that particular air rifle.

A compact 4x32 scope can provide a straightforward setup for beginners and recreational shooters. A 3-9x40 offers greater flexibility, but still requires careful installation. On more powerful break-barrel air rifles, a suitable mount with a recoil stop or arrestor pin can help prevent the scope from creeping along an 11 mm dovetail rail.

Understanding Magnification and Objective Lens Size

The numbers in a scope’s specification describe its magnification range and objective lens diameter. A 3-9x40 scope can magnify the image from three to nine times and has a 40 mm objective lens.

Higher magnification provides a more detailed view of a distant target, but it also reduces the field of view and makes movement appear more pronounced. A 1-6x24 prioritises field of view and speed at closer ranges, while a 4x32 provides a simple, fixed-power sight picture.

The highest available magnification is therefore not automatically the best choice. The correct range depends on the distance, target size, shooting position and characteristics of the rifle.

Matching the Scope, Rings and Rail

How to Mount and Zero a BSA Scope

1. Confirm that the rifle is unloaded and pointing in a safe direction.
2. Fit rings that match both the scope tube and the rifle’s rail.
3. Set the correct eye relief from your normal shooting position.
4. Level the reticle before tightening the ring screws gradually and evenly.
5. Fire an initial group at a short distance using a safe target and backstop.
6. Adjust elevation and windage in accordance with the turret markings.
7. Confirm the zero at your usual shooting distance.

Use the same pellets or ammunition throughout the zeroing process. Base adjustments on groups of several shots rather than a single impact, as one shot may not accurately represent the group’s mean point of impact.

BSA Scope for an Air Rifle or Hunting Rifle?

The optic must always be appropriate for the rifle and its intended use. On an air rifle, important factors include minimum focusing distance, adjustment accuracy and, for spring-piston rifles, resistance to the particular stresses of their firing cycle.

On a hunting rifle, field of view, speed of acquisition, light transmission and suitability for the firearm’s calibre also become important. A scope should never be assumed to fit every rifle solely because its magnification appears suitable.
