Rifle Scope Reticles: 4A, 4Ai, BDC, Mil-Dot, MOA, MIL and Christmas Tree Reticles
The reticle is one of the most important elements of a rifle scope. It influences how quickly the eye finds the aiming point, how uncluttered the target image remains and how much angular information is available for elevation or windage corrections.
Choosing the right reticle is therefore not about finding the design with the greatest number of lines, dots or markings. A clean 4A reticle can be an excellent choice for many hunting situations, while a MOA, MIL/MRAD or Christmas Tree reticle can be far more useful when the shooter needs a large number of angular references.
Manufacturers also use their own names. Swarovski offers reticles such as 4A-I, 4A-IF, 4W-I and BRX-I; Leupold uses names including Duplex, FireDot, TMOA, PR2-MOA and PR2-MIL; Vortex has families such as Dead-Hold BDC, VMR and EBR; and Bushnell combines traditional hunting reticles with BDC, MOA, MIL and precision-oriented designs.
For this reason, this guide groups reticles into functional families. This makes it easier to understand what each design is intended to do and which type of hunter or shooter is most likely to benefit from it.

What is a rifle scope reticle?
A reticle is the pattern of lines, dots, hash marks or other references visible inside the field of view of a rifle scope.
In its simplest form, it provides only a central aiming reference. More advanced reticles may include:
- heavy outer posts for fast visual acquisition;
- fine central crosshairs;
- illuminated centre dots;
- elevation references;
- windage references;
- MOA or MIL/MRAD subtensions;
- BDC marks;
- hash marks;
- Mil-Dot references;
- Christmas Tree structures;

A reticle may therefore be designed primarily for speed and a clean sight picture, or for providing a large amount of angular information. Neither philosophy is universally better; the correct choice depends on the intended use.

1. 4A reticle: clean and intuitive for hunting

The 4A reticle belongs to one of the classic European hunting reticle families. It normally uses prominent outer posts to guide the eye quickly towards a finer and more open central aiming area.
The heavy sections remain easy to identify against difficult backgrounds, while the fine centre helps avoid unnecessarily obscuring the target.
The philosophy is simple: provide enough visual guidance to find the centre quickly while keeping the sight picture as uncluttered as possible.
Advantages of a 4A reticle

Who is a 4A reticle suited to?

A 4A reticle should not be regarded as unsophisticated. Its strength lies precisely in removing information that may not be necessary for the intended use.
2. 4A-I or 4Ai illuminated reticle

A natural evolution of the classic 4A concept is to retain the clean structure while adding an illuminated centre point.
This makes the aiming point easier to identify against dark woodland, shaded backgrounds or difficult lighting conditions without filling the field of view with additional angular references.
Swarovski currently uses designations such as 4A-I and 4A-IF within its rifle scope range.
Advantages of an illuminated 4A-style reticle

3. Plex and Duplex reticles: another classic clean design
Plex and Duplex reticles follow a similarly simple philosophy. The outer lines are usually heavier and taper towards a much finer central crosshair.
4A, Plex, Duplex and Multi-X should not be treated as identical reticles. Their exact geometry differs. What they often share is a common functional philosophy:
guide the eye quickly towards the centre without covering the target with unnecessary markings.

4. BDC reticle: additional references for different trajectories

BDC stands for Bullet Drop Compensation. A BDC reticle includes additional references beneath the central aiming point that can be used as alternative visual hold points.
These references may take many forms:
- horizontal lines;
- dots;
- hash marks;
- circles;
- different-width references;
- additional windage marks.
The key point is that BDC does not describe one universal reticle geometry. It is a functional family. Each manufacturer determines how the reticle is laid out and how the individual references are intended to be interpreted.

5. Mil-Dot reticle: the classic MIL-based architecture

The Mil-Dot reticle is one of the best-known technical reticle designs. Its traditional visual feature is a series of dots positioned along the horizontal and vertical axes.
These dots provide angular references within a system based on MIL/MRAD.
However, one distinction is essential:
Mil-Dot is not synonymous with every MIL reticle.
Mil-Dot describes a particular reticle architecture. Modern MIL reticles may replace traditional dots with:
- hash marks;
- smaller subdivisions;
- numbered references;
- windage marks;
- additional horizontal lines;
- Tree structures;
- Grid structures.
The classic Mil-Dot is therefore an important step in the development of angular reticles, but it is only one way of building a MIL-based reticle.

6. Modern MIL/MRAD reticles
A modern MIL/MRAD reticle uses the milliradian as its angular unit, but visually it may look completely different from a traditional Mil-Dot.

7. MOA reticle: angular references in minutes of angle

A MOA reticle uses the Minute of Angle as the angular unit for its reference marks and subtensions.
As with MIL, MOA does not describe one specific reticle shape. An MOA reticle may be relatively simple or extremely detailed.
Examples of manufacturer terminology include:

- Leupold PR2-MOA;
- Vortex EBR in MOA versions;
- Vortex VMR in MOA versions;
- Bushnell Deploy MOA.
The important point is not that MOA is inherently more precise than MIL. What matters is maintaining a coherent angular system.

8. Tree or Christmas Tree reticles

Tree or Christmas Tree reticles are an important development in modern angular reticle design.
Beneath the central aiming point, a progressively wider structure combines vertical and horizontal references.
This provides direct references for:
- elevation;
- windage;
- holdover;
- lateral holds;
- angular subtensions;
- multiple corrections using the reticle itself.
Who are Tree reticles particularly suited to?
- precision shooters;
- PRS competitors;
- competition shooters;
- users of advanced FFP reticles;
- shooters who make frequent corrections through the reticle rather than relying exclusively on turret adjustment.

Tree vs Grid: similar, but not identical
In everyday use, almost any highly complex precision reticle may be described as a Christmas Tree. However, it is useful to distinguish between a Tree and a Grid.

Comparing rifle scopes can quickly become confusing because manufacturers use their own proprietary names and reticle families.

This table should be treated as a functional guide. The exact geometry, subtensions, illumination and focal-plane position must always be checked against the technical specification of the particular scope and reticle.
Swarovski: 4A-I, PLEX and ballistic references
Swarovski Optik is a strong example of the Central European tradition of clean hunting reticles, while also offering more information-rich designs for other uses.
A configuration such as 4A-I prioritises an uncluttered image and an easily identifiable illuminated centre. Other designs provide additional aiming and ballistic references.
This demonstrates an important principle: one manufacturer can offer very different reticle philosophies depending on the scope and its intended use.
Leupold: from Duplex to MOA and MIL reticles
Leupold also offers a wide range of reticle philosophies.
At one end are clean hunting designs such as Duplex and Hunt-Plex. At the other are MOA and MIL reticles intended for much more technical applications.
Leupold also uses the name FireDot across several illuminated reticle designs. FireDot should not be confused with an angular system such as MOA or MIL; it refers to the illuminated centre reference within particular reticle designs.
Vortex: from Dead-Hold BDC to EBR
Vortex is a particularly useful brand for understanding the progression from relatively simple reference systems to highly detailed precision reticles.
A Dead-Hold BDC provides additional hold references without necessarily reaching the visual density of a competition reticle, while EBR designs can provide much more detailed angular information.
Some reticle families are available in both MOA and MRAD versions, highlighting an important point: the angular unit and the visual reticle architecture are related concepts, but they are not the same thing.
Bushnell: from traditional hunting reticles to precision designs
Bushnell also covers a broad spectrum of reticle design.
The brand includes traditional hunting-oriented layouts as well as BDC, MOA and MIL designs, allowing different users to prioritise either a clean sight picture or a larger number of angular references.

First or second focal plane: fundamental for angular reticles
When a reticle includes angular references, it is also essential to know whether it is positioned in the first focal plane or second focal plane.
First focal plane reticle
With a first focal plane reticle, the apparent size of the reticle changes together with the target image as magnification is adjusted.
This means that the angular relationship between the reticle and the target remains consistent throughout the magnification range.
This is particularly relevant for:
- MIL reticles;
- MOA reticles;
- Tree reticles;
- Grid reticles;
- PRS;
- precision shooting.
Second focal plane reticle
With a second focal plane reticle, the apparent size of the reticle remains essentially constant while the magnification of the target image changes.
This can be particularly pleasant with simple hunting reticles because their visual presence remains consistent throughout the zoom range.
However, when an SFP reticle includes angular subtensions, the shooter must know the manufacturer-specified calibration magnification. It should not automatically be assumed to be the maximum magnification.

MOA and MIL are angular systems, not fixed reticle shapes
One of the most common misunderstandings is to treat MOA and MIL as though each term described one specific reticle pattern.
It does not.
You can have:
- a relatively simple MOA reticle;
- a MOA Christmas Tree reticle;
- a clean MIL reticle;
- a classic Mil-Dot reticle;
- a MIL Tree reticle;
- a MIL Grid reticle.
Two concepts should therefore always be separated:
reticle architecture + angular measurement system.

Reticle and turrets: ideally, they should speak the same language
With angular reticles, it is usually more intuitive when the reticle and turret adjustments use the same unit.

A mixed system can work, but matching the reticle and turret units removes an additional conversion step.
An advanced reticle does not remove parallax
A reticle containing numerous subtensions and references does not eliminate parallax.
Reticle design, focal plane and parallax are separate optical concepts. The more precisely the shooter intends to use angular references, the more important it becomes to understand the complete optical system.

Is a reticle with more markings automatically better?
No.
A Christmas Tree reticle can provide far more information than a 4A, but that information is only useful when the shooter actually needs it and understands how to interpret it.

Common mistakes when choosing a reticle
- Assuming that more markings automatically mean a better reticle.
- Choosing a Tree or Grid reticle when its references will never be used.
- Treating Mil-Dot as a synonym for every MIL reticle.
- Assuming all BDC reticles share the same geometry.
- Confusing MOA with one particular visual design.
- Confusing MIL/MRAD with Mil-Dot.
- Failing to check whether the reticle is FFP or SFP.
- Using SFP subtensions without knowing the calibration magnification.
- Combining reticle and turret units without understanding both scales.
- Choosing a reticle that is too fine for the lighting conditions in which it will be used.
- Choosing an overly busy reticle for a discipline where speed matters more.
- Failing to consult the manufacturer's official reticle diagram.
- Choosing a reticle purely by its marketing name without understanding its references.

- What is my main shooting or hunting discipline?
- Do I need speed or a large number of angular references?
- Will I use the scope for driven hunting, stalking, long range, airgun or PRS?
- Do I need an illuminated centre?
- Will I often use the scope in low light?
- Will I make corrections through the reticle?
- Do I prefer MOA or MIL/MRAD?
- Do the turret adjustments use the same unit as the reticle?
- Is the reticle in the first or second focal plane?
- If it is SFP, at what magnification are the subtensions calibrated?
- Do I need windage references?
- Do I genuinely need a Tree or Grid reticle?
- Will I mostly dial the turrets and therefore prefer a cleaner reticle?
- Have I checked the manufacturer's technical reticle diagram?
The reticle is part of a complete system
As important as the reticle is, it should never be considered in isolation.
Practical performance depends on the relationship between:
rifle or air rifle + ammunition or pellets + scope mounts and rings + rifle scope + reticle + turrets + focal plane + parallax + distance + conditions + hunter or shooter.
Even an excellent optic and a perfectly chosen reticle cannot compensate for an unsuitable scope mounting system.

Which rifle scope reticle should you choose?
There is no single reticle that is ideal for every user and every discipline.
As a general guide:
- 4A: clean, intuitive and hunting-oriented.
- 4A-I / illuminated hunting reticle: rapid centre acquisition and improved visibility.
- Plex / Duplex: simple and versatile hunting designs.
- BDC: additional hold references without extreme complexity.
- Mil-Dot: classic MIL-based reticle architecture.
- Modern MIL/MRAD: more advanced angular references.
- MOA: angular references within the Minute of Angle system.
- Tree: numerous vertical and horizontal references.
- Grid: very high reference density for advanced applications.
For a driven-hunt hunter, a clean illuminated 4A-style reticle may make far more sense than a dense competition reticle. For a PRS shooter, exactly the opposite may be true.
The right question is therefore not “Which reticle is the most advanced?”, but:
“What information do I actually need to see inside my rifle scope?”
