Light conditions can change, ranges can vary, and when the opportunity finally comes, the complete setup needs to feel stable, natural and predictable. A poorly balanced choice can result in unnecessary weight, an awkward shooting position or features that are rarely used in the field.

1. Choosing a scope by magnification alone and overlooking optical quality
One of the most common mistakes is comparing rifle scopes purely by their magnification range. A 4-24x scope is not automatically better for stalking than a 3-18x model, just as more magnification does not guarantee a more useful image in real hunting conditions.
The quality of the image depends on the complete optical system: glass quality, lens coatings, resolution, contrast, colour fidelity, control of stray light and performance as available light begins to fall.
During stalking, being able to separate an animal clearly from its surroundings can be more valuable than having extremely high magnification. A sharp, high-contrast image often provides more useful information than greater enlargement with poorer optical quality.
It is also worth considering image quality throughout the zoom range. In many real hunting situations, intermediate magnifications are used far more often than the maximum setting.

3. Choosing turrets and a reticle without considering how you will actually use them
A modern stalking scope may include capped turrets, exposed ballistic turrets, Zero Stop systems and MOA- or MRAD-based reticles. More adjustment features, however, do not automatically make a scope better for hunting.
The most important question is: which corrections will you genuinely make in the field?
If you normally work from a fixed zero and make very few adjustments, simple protected turrets may be more practical. If you regularly dial elevation, clearly marked, repeatable turrets with a reliable return to zero become much more important.
The position of the reticle within the optical system also matters.

4. Ignoring parallax and mechanical repeatability
As distance and magnification increase, parallax becomes more important.
If the target image and reticle are not optically aligned on the same plane, moving the eye behind the scope can make the reticle appear to move relative to the target. This is why many rifle scopes designed for stalking and longer ranges include a side parallax adjustment.

A large objective lens, bigger tube, substantial turrets and a very wide zoom range can all look attractive individually. Combined, however, they can result in a heavy scope that noticeably changes the balance and handling of the rifle.
For hill stalking or long days on foot, consider the weight of the complete rifle system:

- mounts and bases;

A few hundred extra grams may appear insignificant on a specification sheet, but they can become far more noticeable after several hours in difficult terrain.
There is therefore no single perfect stalking scope for every hunter. Someone covering long distances in the hills may place much greater value on a lighter setup than someone stalking over shorter distances.
6. Choosing the scope without considering the rifle and mounts
This is one of the mistakes that can have the greatest effect on the finished setup. The rifle, scope and mounting system should be considered as one complete unit.
Before choosing a scope, check the tube diameter, the actual outside diameter of the objective bell, the available mounting length and the rail or bases fitted to the rifle.
Mounting height is particularly important.
A large objective can require higher rings. If the sight line then sits too high above the stock, it can become more difficult to achieve a natural and repeatable cheek position.
At the same time, the scope should not be mounted so low that the objective, barrel, action or other components interfere with one another.
Eye relief should be set with the rifle mounted naturally to the shoulder. You should be able to obtain a full sight picture without deliberately moving your head forwards or backwards.

How much should you spend on a stalking rifle scope?
