What is a bushing and what is it used for?

A reloading bushing is a precision component inserted into the neck sizing die to control the final diameter of the case neck.
It allows the neck tension to be standardised according to the outside diameter of the case and the bullet diameter, ensuring optimal crimp and bullet alignment.
It is not a cartridge calibre — it is a reloading tool.

How do I know which bushing I need?

Select the bushing according to the exact neck diameter you wish to achieve, not by cartridge name. For example:

For a .244 Winchester case, use a 0.244 bushing.

For a 6.5 mm case, the appropriate size will typically fall between 0.268 and 0.290, depending on case dimensions and bullet diameter.

There is no such thing as a fixed “6.5 Creedmoor” bushing; the correct size must be calculated from actual measurements.

Is there direct compatibility with commercial calibres?

No. A single fixed bushing is not assigned to a calibre such as “.308 Winchester”.

You must measure:

The neck diameter after deburring,

The diameter of the bullet you intend to use,

The desired neck tension (clearance, grip or crimp level).

You then select the bushing that produces the final diameter you require.

Which bushing should I use when reloading .308 with a .308 bullet?

There is no universal bushing. Example:

.308 bullet = 0.308"

A .308 Winchester case may require a 0.310", 0.311" or 0.312" bushing depending on the desired neck tension.

The correct approach is to measure both the case and the bullet, then select the appropriate diameter.

Bushings are selected by neck diameter, not by cartridge name (e.g., 6.5 Creedmoor or 308 Winchester). They are unrelated to Picatinny or Weaver rail systems.
