What is the Cometa Gas Power System?

The Gas Power System is Cometa’s gas-piston solution for selected break-barrel air rifles. Cocking the rifle compresses the gas inside a sealed unit. When the trigger is released, the stored energy drives the piston forwards and rapidly compresses the air in the cylinder. This compressed air, rather than the gas unit itself, propels the pellet through the barrel.

A Cometa GP is not a PCP air rifle. It does not use a reservoir that supplies a series of shots and requires no hand pump, charging cylinder or compressor. The rifle must be cocked again before every shot by breaking the barrel.

Cometa GP versus a traditional spring air rifle

Both systems use a piston to compress the air behind the pellet, but they store energy differently. A conventional spring-piston rifle compresses a coiled steel mainspring, whereas a Cometa GP compresses a sealed pneumatic unit.

The gas piston removes the oscillation associated specifically with a steel mainspring, but it does not eliminate the mechanical reaction caused by the moving piston. The system alone does not guarantee greater accuracy.

The Cometa Fenix 400 GP combines the established Fenix 400 platform with the Gas Power System. It may be offered with different stocks, finishes, barrel configurations and equipment packages.

Cometa Fusion GP

The Cometa Fusion GP applies the same technology to a different Cometa platform. Its differences from a Fenix 400 GP are not limited to the powerplant: stock design, balance, weight, barrel and included equipment can also vary.

Always compare the exact product references rather than assuming that all GP-labelled rifles share the same handling or specification.

Combo and Sniper packages

Some Cometa GP models are supplied as packages containing a scope, mounts or other accessories. The commercial names Combo and Sniper do not describe a different firing system; they identify the equipment included with a particular reference.

Which calibre should you choose?

4.5 mm (.177)

This calibre uses generally lighter pellets and normally provides a flatter trajectory. It is widely chosen for recreational shooting, practice and target shooting.

5.5 mm (.22)

The 5.5 mm calibre uses heavier pellets and produces a different trajectory. Accurate range estimation and suitable sight settings become increasingly important.

6.35 mm (.25)

Some configurations may be available in 6.35 mm. These substantially heavier pellets require close attention to the rifle’s actual output, pellet drop and intended shooting distance.

Calibre alone does not determine power or accuracy. Check the specification of the exact market version and only use the calibre marked by the manufacturer.

Use and experience

Consider whether the rifle will be used mainly for recreational shooting, practice or target shooting. The most powerful or heaviest option is not necessarily the most suitable choice for a new shooter or for longer shooting sessions.

Stock and handling

Use diabolo pellets in the exact calibre marked on the rifle. The best pellet is not automatically the lightest, heaviest or fastest; it is the one that produces the most consistent groups through the individual barrel.

Manufacturers use their own trade names: Cometa GP, Gamo IGT, Norica GRS, Hatsan Vortex and Crosman Nitro Piston. These systems share a broad mechanical principle, but this does not make the rifles equivalent.

Barrel quality, trigger performance, stock fit, weight, setup and pellet selection may matter more in practice than the name of the gas-piston system.
