First or Second Focal Plane?

In a first focal plane riflescope (FFP), the apparent size of the reticle changes with magnification. The reticle subtensions therefore remain proportional to the target throughout the magnification range, which can be useful when measuring or applying holdovers at different settings.

In a second focal plane riflescope (SFP), the reticle appears to remain the same size as magnification changes. Any subtension-based references are normally accurate at one specified magnification, depending on the model.

FFP is often preferred for technical long-range configurations, while SFP remains popular for hunting because the reticle stays clearly visible and visually consistent. Neither system is automatically better for every hunter.

Why Parallax Adjustment Matters

Parallax error occurs when the target image and reticle are not focused on the same optical plane. If the shooter’s eye moves away from the optical centre, the reticle can appear to move across the target.

A side-focus or adjustable-objective system allows the riflescope to be set for the approximate shooting distance. This is particularly useful at high magnification and at extended ranges, where small aiming errors become more significant.

Parallax adjustment should not be confused with the ocular focus. The ocular adjustment focuses the reticle for the shooter’s eyesight, while the parallax control adjusts the relationship between the reticle and target image.

Main Tube Diameter and Available Adjustment Range

Long-range hunting riflescopes are available with main tube diameters such as 1 inch, 30 mm, 34 mm, 35 mm and 36 mm. A larger main tube can provide additional internal space for the adjustment mechanism, although the actual elevation travel depends on the individual model.

A wider tube does not automatically transmit more light. Light transmission is primarily determined by the complete optical design, lens quality, coatings and exit pupil rather than the main tube diameter alone.

The tube diameter must match the scope rings exactly. A 34 mm riflescope, for example, requires 34 mm rings.

Choosing the Correct Mount and Ring Height

The riflescope mount is a critical part of the complete rifle-and-optic setup. It must be compatible with the exact rifle, base or rail, main tube diameter and riflescope dimensions.

The objective bell must clear the barrel, receiver, rail and any iron sights or accessories. At the same time, the riflescope should not be mounted unnecessarily high, as excessive height can affect cheek weld and shooting position.

A long-range hunting riflescope and a competition riflescope may share features such as high magnification, exposed turrets, FFP reticles or parallax adjustment, but their priorities are not identical.

For stalking and hunting, weight, low-light performance, field of view, weather resistance and simple operation can be decisive. A competition riflescope may instead prioritise extensive adjustment travel, highly detailed reticles and frequent turret corrections.
