What types of pellets exist and what are their applications?

Undercalibrated and Supercalibrated: Undercalibrated pellets have a slightly smaller diameter than the nominal one, such as 4.49 mm, and are usually used to increase velocity and decrease friction in the barrel. The supercalibrated ones, on the other hand, have a slightly larger diameter, such as 4.52 mm, offering a better seal and greater energy on impact.
Lead Qualities and Alternative Materials: Pellets can be made of pure lead or alloys of lead with antimony for greater hardness. There are also combination pellets with a steel or plastic tip for different effects on the target, such as greater penetration or expansion.
Pesos:
Light (below 7 grains): Ideal for high speed and short distance shooting.
Standard (7-9 grains): The most versatile, suitable for most applications.
Heavy (more than 9 grains): They offer greater stability and energy at longer distances, ideal for hunting and pest control.
Shapes of Pellets and Their Uses:
Flat Head (Wadcutter): Ideal for target shooting and competition, as they create well-defined holes in the target.
Round Head (Domed): They offer better aerodynamics and stability at long distances, suitable for hunting and precision shooting.
Pointed Head: They combine characteristics of flat and round pellets, offering a good balance between precision and penetration.
Hollow Point: Designed for expansion on impact, ideal for small game hunting and pest control.
Metal or Steel Tip: They offer high penetration, suitable for harder targets.
Shotgun Pellets (BBs): Made of steel and generally used in BB guns and rifles for recreational shooting and plinking.

4.5 mm (.177) Pellets: Precision, Choice and the Benchmark Airgun Calibre

4.5 mm (.177) pellets are the most widely used ammunition in the airgun world and offer an exceptional choice of weights, head shapes, materials and quality levels. The calibre is used in air rifles and air pistols for recreational shooting, training, Field Target and high-level target shooting.

At CARBIN you will find a broad selection of .177 airgun pellets from specialist manufacturers including Gamo, H&N Sport, JSB, RWS, Norica, Norma, Diana and BSA. The range covers Match and Wadcutter pellets for paper targets, Domed designs for precision and Field Target, as well as Pointed, Hollow Point and specialised projectiles.

To compare all available calibres and manufacturers, visit our main airgun pellet collection. If you are still choosing the platform itself, explore our air rifles.

What Does 4.5 mm or .177 Calibre Mean?

In airguns, 4.5 mm corresponds approximately to .177 inch. This is why the same ammunition may be described as 4.5 mm, .177 or .177 calibre.

The figure refers to the nominal projectile diameter. However, not every pellet sold as 4.5 mm has exactly the same head dimensions.

Precision and competition pellets may be available with specific head sizes such as 4.49 mm, 4.50 mm, 4.51 mm or 4.52 mm. These extremely small dimensional differences allow shooters to fine-tune the fit between pellet and barrel.

Why Is .177 So Important for Precision Airgun Shooting?

.177 pellets are generally lighter than comparable projectiles in .22, .25 or .30 calibre. At the same available energy, a lighter projectile can normally achieve a higher muzzle velocity.

This does not mean that every 4.5 mm pellet is automatically more accurate or always produces a flatter trajectory. Real performance depends on the combination of pellet weight, geometry, velocity, aerodynamic properties and barrel compatibility.

Where .177 has an undisputed position is precision target shooting. The 4.5 mm calibre is the traditional standard for international 10-metre air rifle and air pistol disciplines.

4.5 mm Pellets for 10-Metre Target Shooting and Competition

Precision shooting at 10 metres is particularly associated with Match or Wadcutter pellets. Their completely flat head punches a clean, sharply defined hole in a paper target, making accurate scoring easier.

In this type of ammunition, maximum velocity is not the priority. What matters most is extreme consistency from pellet to pellet: weight, head diameter, head geometry, skirt and surface finish must remain within very tight tolerances.

Well-known examples include RWS R10 Match, H&N Finale Match, JSB Match and Gamo Match.

Compare our RWS 4.5 mm pellets, H&N Sport 4.5 mm pellets, JSB pellets and Gamo 4.5 mm pellets.

Types of .177 Pellets: Match, Domed, Pointed, Hollow Point and Special Designs

Projectile geometry is one of the biggest differences between pellets. Two pellets with the same nominal calibre may behave very differently because of their head shape, waist, skirt and weight distribution.

Pellet typeShapeMain characteristicCommon use
Match / WadcutterFlat headCuts a clean hole in paper targets10 m target shooting, training and competition
Domed / Round NoseRounded headVersatile profile with favourable aerodynamicsPrecision, Field Target and general shooting
PointedConical or pointed headReduced frontal areaPlinking and design-specific applications
Hollow PointFront cavityDistinct geometry from a conventional Domed pelletSpecific applications depending on design
Special / HybridCombined materials or geometriesChanges weight, hardness or projectile behaviourSpecialised shooting and testing

For a deeper explanation of each design, read our Classification and Types of Pellets guide.

Anatomy of a Diabolo Pellet: Head, Waist and Skirt

A traditional Diabolo pellet is made up of three main functional areas:

  • Head: the front section that guides the projectile and defines much of its external geometry.
  • Waist: the narrow central section characteristic of the Diabolo design.
  • Skirt: the rear section, normally thinner, which assists sealing and engagement with the rifling.

Very small differences in these areas can influence projectile behaviour. This is why premium Match pellets place such a strong emphasis on dimensional uniformity.

Why Does Lead Quality Matter in an Airgun Pellet?

Traditional airgun pellets are primarily produced from lead or lead-based alloys. Lead combines high density with good formability, allowing manufacturers to produce compact projectiles with precise and complex geometries.

Pellet quality, however, is not determined simply by whether a projectile is made from lead. Other important factors include:

  • quality and consistency of the raw material;
  • alloy composition;
  • precision of dies and forming tools;
  • weight consistency;
  • dimensional consistency;
  • head and skirt geometry;
  • surface finish;
  • quality control throughout production.

What Does Antimony Do in a Lead Alloy?

In metallurgy, antimony may be added to lead to modify its mechanical properties, particularly hardness and resistance to deformation.

More antimony does not automatically mean a better pellet. Manufacturers need to balance hardness, ductility, dimensional stability and how the projectile engages the barrel.

A very soft projectile may be more easily damaged during transport or handling. A significantly harder projectile may react differently when it engages the lands and grooves of a rifled barrel.

Manufacturers use different formulations, so specific antimony percentages should only be attributed to a particular brand when officially documented.

Lead Pellets vs Lead-Free and Alloy Pellets

Alongside traditional lead ammunition, shooters can also choose lead-free pellets and lightweight alloy projectiles. Their different density and hardness can significantly change projectile mass and velocity.

CharacteristicTraditional lead pelletLight alloy / lead-free pellet

How Heavy Are 4.5 mm (.177) Pellets?

.177 is available in a remarkably wide range of weights. Competition Match pellets may be relatively light, while heavier Domed designs intended for other airgun platforms can exceed 9 or 10 grains.

Pellet weight is commonly expressed in grains (gr). For reference, 1 grain equals approximately 0.0648 grams.

Weight in grainsApprox. weight in gramsIndicative category
6 gr0.39 gVery light
7 gr0.45 gLight / Match
7.5 gr0.49 gLight to medium
8 gr0.52 gMedium
8.2 gr0.53 gMedium / Match
8.5 gr0.55 gMedium
9 gr0.58 gMedium-heavy
10 gr0.65 gHeavy
10.5 gr0.68 gHeavy

These ranges are only a guide. A heavier pellet is not automatically more accurate than a lighter one.

4.49 mm, 4.50 mm, 4.51 mm or 4.52 mm: What Is the Difference?

Precision .177 ammunition is frequently offered in different head sizes.

Head sizeCompared with 4.50 mmPurpose
4.49 mmSlightly smallerFine-tuning for particular precision barrels
4.50 mmReference dimensionCommon general and competition size
4.51 mmSlightly largerAlternative barrel fit
4.52 mmLarger than 4.50 mmCommon precision alternative

These values do not represent four completely different calibres. They are small dimensional variations within the nominal 4.5 mm / .177 family.

Undersized and Oversized .177 Pellet Head Sizes

In simplified terms, a 4.49 mm pellet may be described as slightly undersized relative to the 4.50 mm reference, while 4.51 and 4.52 mm represent slightly larger head dimensions.

A larger pellet head is not automatically better. A very tight fit may increase resistance in the barrel, while a smaller head may engage the rifling differently.

The only reliable way to determine which size a particular barrel prefers is to compare groups while keeping the other variables as consistent as possible.

Why Can Two .177 Pellets Produce Completely Different Groups?

Nominal calibre is only one part of the equation.

Performance may be influenced by:

  • actual projectile weight;
  • head size;
  • head geometry;
  • skirt consistency;
  • material hardness;
  • alloy composition;
  • overall pellet length;
  • surface quality;
  • engagement with the rifling;
  • projectile velocity;
  • consistency between pellets from the same tin.

This is why two visually similar pellets of the same calibre can produce noticeably different results in the same air rifle.

Consistency: The Key to a High-Precision Pellet

Precision is not about producing one perfect pellet. The real challenge is producing hundreds of pellets that are as close to identical as possible.

Important factors include:

  • consistent weight;
  • consistent head diameter;
  • symmetrical head shape;
  • uniform skirt geometry;
  • clean surface finish;
  • minimal burrs or deformation;
  • consistent material properties.

This additional manufacturing and quality-control work helps explain the price difference between basic plinking ammunition and premium Match pellets.

RWS 4.5 mm: R10 Match and German Target-Shooting Heritage

RWS is one of Europe's established names in airgun ammunition.

The RWS R10 Match family demonstrates how highly specialised competition ammunition can become. CARBIN currently offers R10 4.5 mm versions at 0.45 g and 0.53 g.

The range also includes products such as RWS Club, Superdome, Super Field, Supermag and Hypermax, allowing shooters to compare target, Domed and lead-free concepts.

H&N Sport .177: Match, Field Target and Different Head Sizes

H&N Sport offers one of the broadest selections of premium .177 ammunition.

The range includes Match pellets, Domed designs, Field Target ammunition and specialised projectiles, together with different pellet weights and head diameters.

CARBIN currently lists examples including H&N Match Heavy 4.49 mm, Finale Match Heavy 4.49 mm, Baracuda FT and Baracuda Match, making the range particularly useful when comparing both projectile mass and head size.

JSB .177 Pellets: Exact, Match and 4.52 mm Options

JSB is one of the most recognised manufacturers in precision airgun ammunition.

Two product philosophies are especially relevant in .177:

  • JSB Match: flat-head pellets intended for paper target shooting.
  • JSB Exact: round-head projectiles designed for precision and longer shooting distances.

The CARBIN range includes JSB ammunition in both 4.5 mm and 4.52 mm, including Match Light, Match Middle, Match S100 Heavy and several Exact-family options.

Gamo 4.5 mm: Match, Magnum, Hunter and AccuTek

Gamo 4.5 mm pellets cover a particularly broad range of designs, from traditional training ammunition to specialised projectile concepts.

The range includes families such as Match, Pro-Magnum, Magnum, Hunter, Hollow Point, TS-10, Red Fire and PCP Special.

Gamo has also developed its newer AccuTek pellet range, which updates several established pellet designs.

What Is Gamo AccuTek?

AccuTek is an evolved generation of Gamo airgun ammunition. Depending on the individual model, Gamo has revised material properties, internal geometry, weight distribution and manufacturing control.

CARBIN currently lists AccuTek versions including:

  • Gamo Match AccuTek;
  • Gamo Hollow Point AccuTek;
  • Gamo Hunter AccuTek;
  • Gamo Red Fire AccuTek;
  • Gamo Rocket AccuTek;
  • Gamo Pro Magnum AccuTek;
  • Gamo Hunter Titan AccuTek.

The Gamo Match AccuTek is particularly interesting from a technical perspective because Gamo uses a new, more ductile lead alloy and an internal redesign intended to improve pellet consistency and barrel adaptation.

European Pellet Manufacturing: Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic

Europe has a long industrial tradition in high-quality airgun ammunition.

Country of origin alone does not determine accuracy. The decisive factors are raw-material control, tooling quality, manufacturing tolerances, projectile consistency and final inspection.

.177 Pellets for Field Target and Longer-Range Precision

While 10-metre Match shooting is strongly associated with flat-head pellets, Field Target and longer-distance target shooting commonly use high-quality Domed or Round Nose pellets.

Families such as JSB Exact and H&N Field Target Trophy illustrate this approach particularly well.

The best projectile should always be determined by testing groups through the individual air rifle.

4.5 mm Pellets for PCP Air Rifles

.177 also has an important place among modern PCP air rifles.

The velocity consistency achievable with a well-regulated PCP platform makes it particularly useful for comparing small changes in projectile weight, geometry and head diameter.

In PCP rifles, .177 ammunition is not limited to lightweight Match pellets. Depending on the platform, heavier Domed pellets can also be particularly relevant.

4.5 mm Pellets for Spring and Gas-Ram Air Rifles

.177 is also extremely common in traditional spring and gas-ram air rifles.

On these systems, pellet weight can influence the dynamic behaviour of the complete firing cycle. The lightest pellet is therefore not automatically the most accurate, and the heaviest is not necessarily the best choice either.

Start with the manufacturer's technical guidance, then compare compatible ammunition under consistent test conditions.

.177 vs .22 vs .25 vs .30 Airgun Calibres

Each airgun calibre combines projectile diameter and mass in a different way.

How to Choose the Best .177 Pellet for Your Air Rifle

There is no single 4.5 mm pellet that is universally the most accurate.

A useful testing process is:

  1. Select several technically compatible pellets.
  2. Compare different weights with a similar head design first.
  3. Then compare different head shapes.
  4. If available, test different head sizes such as 4.49, 4.50, 4.51 and 4.52 mm.
  5. Keep distance, rest and shooting conditions consistent.
  6. Compare several groups rather than individual shots.
  7. Record the results to identify repeatable trends.

This helps separate the effects of weight, head size, geometry and manufacturer.

Are Premium Match Pellets Worth the Extra Cost?

It depends on the purpose. For informal plinking, competition-level pellet selection may not be necessary.

When the objective is extremely tight grouping or precise scoring on paper targets, the higher dimensional consistency of a Match pellet can become valuable.

The extra cost of premium ammunition is not simply the material itself. It may also reflect higher-precision tooling, tighter tolerances, additional inspection and better consistency from pellet to pellet.
