Bushnell scopes for hunting, sport shooting and precision
Bushnell scopes have long been part of the hunting and sporting optics market, covering everything from low-power hunting optics to specialist scopes for precision and long-range shooting. Over different generations, the American manufacturer has developed solutions for woodland hunting, stalking, low-light use, target shooting and more demanding distance applications.
The Bushnell range now combines the new R3, R5 and R7 generation with established families including Nitro, Engage, Forge, Trophy, Banner, AR Optics, Match Pro, Match Pro ED and Elite Tactical. Each family follows a different philosophy in terms of magnification, reticle, turrets, parallax, focal plane and intended use.
To compare Bushnell with other manufacturers and configurations, explore our main collection of scopes for hunting and sport shooting. To discover the wider manufacturer range, visit our main Bushnell optics collection.
Which Bushnell scope should you choose?
Choosing a Bushnell scope should start with the intended application and typical shooting distance. A low-power hunting optic for fast woodland shooting has very different requirements from a scope designed for stalking or long-range precision.
The main factors to compare are:
- Magnification range: determines how flexible the scope is across different distances.
- Field of view: especially important for fast target acquisition.
- Objective diameter: affects size, weight and optical behaviour.
- Reticle: should match the hunting or shooting application.
- Turrets: become more important when frequent corrections are required.
- Parallax adjustment: increasingly relevant at higher magnification and longer distance.
- Focal plane: FFP or SFP can be important for precision-oriented optics.
- Main tube diameter: determines ring and mount compatibility.
New Bushnell R3, R5 and R7 scopes
The new Bushnell R-Series expands the hunting scope range with three distinct families: R3, R5 and R7. These new series do not replace the entire Bushnell catalogue, but they represent the latest generation of scopes primarily developed around hunting applications.
The range covers classic hunting configurations, low-power optics for fast shooting and more advanced scopes for stalking and increased distance.
| Bushnell series | Configurations | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Bushnell R3 | 3-9x40 · 3-9x50 · 4-12x40 · 6-18x50 | General hunting, stalking and classic configurations |
| Bushnell R5 | 1-6x24 · 3-9x40 · 3-9x50 · 4-12x40 · 6-18x50 | Fast hunting and versatile field use |
| Bushnell R7 | 1-8x24 · 2-10x42 · 3-15x50 · 4-20x50 | Fast hunting, stalking and greater distances |
Bushnell R3: classic and versatile hunting configurations
Bushnell R3 retains several of the most familiar magnification formats used in hunting optics.
- R3 3-9x40: a classic and versatile general hunting configuration.
- R3 3-9x50: the same magnification range with a larger 50 mm objective.
- R3 4-12x40: additional magnification while retaining a relatively compact objective.
- R3 6-18x50: designed for situations where greater detail is required at distance.
Bushnell R5: greater versatility with 1-6x24
Bushnell R5 broadens the R-Series and adds a particularly important configuration for fast hunting: the R5 1-6x24.
The family also includes 3-9x40, 3-9x50, 4-12x40 and 6-18x50 formats, allowing R5 to cover everything from woodland hunting to more general-purpose field use and increased distances.
Bushnell R7: the higher-performance new R-Series
Bushnell R7 occupies the higher-performance position within the new generation.
- R7 1-8x24: particularly suited to fast hunting and rapid target acquisition.
- R7 2-10x42: a highly versatile configuration for different hunting environments.
- R7 3-15x50: greater magnification for stalking and longer-distance observation.
- R7 4-20x50: the highest-magnification configuration within the current R7 family.
Depending on the version, R7 incorporates technologies such as ED Prime Glass, EXO Barrier, illuminated reticles and different turret, parallax and focal-plane configurations.
Bushnell scope for fast hunting and woodland use
Low-power scopes are particularly useful when field of view and rapid target acquisition are more important than maximum magnification.
Within the new Bushnell range, two configurations stand out:
- Bushnell R5 1-6x24: a classic low-power format combining speed with useful magnification.
- Bushnell R7 1-8x24: a broader zoom range while retaining a clear fast-hunting focus.
Previous Bushnell families such as Nitro, Engage and Forge also remain relevant because they have offered similar low-power configurations.
Bushnell Nitro: versatile hunting optics
Bushnell Nitro remains a recognisable family within the wider Bushnell scope range.
Depending on the exact model, Nitro can cover very different applications. Lower magnification versions prioritise speed and field of view, while higher-powered configurations offer greater flexibility at distance.
Bushnell Engage: versatile scopes for hunting and shooting
Bushnell Engage covers a variety of magnification and reticle configurations.
Lower-powered models prioritise field of view and speed, while higher-powered versions provide more detail and greater flexibility as distance increases.
This makes Engage relevant to both hunting and sporting applications, depending on the specific model.
Bushnell Forge: higher-performance optics
Bushnell Forge represents one of Bushnell’s more ambitious recent-generation optic families.
Depending on the model, Forge has included features such as ED Prime glass, EXO Barrier and more advanced mechanical configurations aimed at users seeking higher optical and mechanical performance.
Bushnell Trophy: an established Bushnell family
Bushnell Trophy remains one of the best-known historical Bushnell product names.
The Trophy family has long been associated with hunting and outdoor optics and continues to play an important role within the broader Bushnell ecosystem.
Bushnell Banner and the classic 3-9x40
The 3-9x40 remains one of the most recognisable hunting scope configurations.
Bushnell Banner has historically been closely associated with simple, versatile optics in this category.
A 3-9x magnification range provides a useful balance for short- to medium-distance hunting, while a 40 mm objective helps keep the overall scope relatively compact.
Bushnell AR Optics
Bushnell AR Optics represents another distinct branch within the wider Bushnell scope catalogue.
These models have been offered in lower-power configurations and should be compared according to magnification, reticle, tube diameter, adjustment system and intended sporting use rather than simply by family name.
Bushnell Match Pro and Match Pro ED for precision
Bushnell Match Pro and Match Pro ED follow a different philosophy from the new R-Series. While R3, R5 and R7 are primarily hunting-oriented, Match Pro and Match Pro ED are much more strongly focused on sport shooting and precision.
In this type of scope, the following become particularly important:
- repeatable turrets;
- reticles with angular references;
- first focal plane on appropriate models;
- parallax adjustment;
- available elevation travel;
- consistent reticle and turret units;
- higher magnification ranges.
Bushnell Match Pro ED develops this concept further for users looking for higher optical and mechanical performance within a precision-oriented platform.
Bushnell Elite Tactical for long-range shooting
Bushnell Elite Tactical represents the more specialised precision and long-range side of the Bushnell catalogue.
At longer distances, maximum magnification is only one part of the equation. Other important factors include:
- turret repeatability;
- available elevation travel;
- parallax adjustment;
- first or second focal plane;
- reticle design;
- main tube diameter;
- control ergonomics.
Bushnell scope for stalking
For stalking, a balanced combination of weight, magnification and optical quality is often more useful than an excessively large scope.
Interesting Bushnell configurations include:
- R3 and R5 3-9x40: simple and relatively compact formats.
- R5 4-12x40: greater magnification without a particularly large objective.
- R7 2-10x42: one of the most versatile configurations in the new range.
- R7 3-15x50: particularly useful when typical distances increase.
- Nitro and Engage: established families with several suitable configurations.
Bushnell scopes for low-light hunting
For dawn, dusk and low-light hunting, image quality, reticle visibility and a suitable magnification range become increasingly important.
The Bushnell range includes several 50 mm configurations, including R3 3-9x50, R5 3-9x50, R5 6-18x50, R7 3-15x50 and R7 4-20x50.
Objective diameter should never be considered in isolation. Glass quality, lens coatings, magnification, exit pupil and actual light conditions also affect real-world performance.
Bushnell scope for long-range shooting
For long-range shooting, the priorities change significantly compared with a traditional hunting scope.
Within the Bushnell catalogue, Match Pro, Match Pro ED and Elite Tactical are particularly relevant to this type of use.
The more frequently corrections are made, the more important turret quality, reticle design, parallax adjustment and available elevation range become.
Parallax on a Bushnell scope
Scope parallax becomes increasingly important as distance and magnification increase.
On scopes equipped with adjustable parallax, correct setup can help reduce apparent reticle movement in relation to the target when eye position changes slightly.
Bushnell reticles: hunting, FFP and precision
The reticle should always match the intended application.
A simple hunting reticle serves a different purpose from a reticle designed for angular holds and precision corrections.
Important factors to compare include:
- line thickness;
- illumination;
- elevation and wind references;
- angular unit;
- first or second focal plane;
- visibility at low magnification.
On certain R7 configurations and precision-focused models such as Match Pro or Elite Tactical, the distinction between FFP and SFP can become especially important.
EXO Barrier and ED Prime Glass
EXO Barrier is a Bushnell protective lens coating designed to reduce the adhesion of water, dirt, oil and other contaminants to exposed optical surfaces.
On higher-positioned models, including selected R7 configurations and other premium families, Bushnell also uses ED Prime Glass to improve resolution, contrast and colour fidelity.

| 3-15x50 | Stalking and hunting precision | R7 |
| 4-20x50 | Hunting at greater distances | R7 |
| 5-30x56 / 6-24x / 6-36x | Sport shooting and precision | Match Pro / Match Pro ED / Elite Tactical |
Scope mounts for Bushnell scopes
A good optic needs a stable and correctly sized mounting system.
Before choosing scope rings or mounts, check:
- main tube diameter;
- rail or base system;
- required mounting height;
- outside objective diameter;
- bolt clearance;
- eye relief;
- available clearance above the barrel.
For a detailed explanation, read our definitive guide to hunting scope mounts and rings.
Extra Tip: which scope mount should you choose for a Bushnell?
The mount is part of the optical system. A premium scope fitted with incorrectly sized rings or mounted unnecessarily high will not provide the best overall setup.
- Compact objectives: often allow lower mounting rings.
- 50 or 56 mm objectives: may require additional clearance.
- 1", 30 mm or 34 mm tubes: require exactly matching ring diameters.
- Precision scopes: benefit from rigid and repeatable mounting systems.
- Picatinny or Weaver rails: compatibility must be checked before choosing the mount.
Warne scope mounts for Bushnell scopes
Warne specialises in scope rings, bases and mounting systems for a wide variety of optical configurations.
For a Bushnell scope, the correct Warne mount should be selected according to tube diameter, base or rail interface, required height and intended use, rather than the Bushnell name alone.
