What does it mean to zero an Aimpoint?

Zeroing an Aimpoint means adjusting the relationship between the red dot you see through the sight and the actual point of impact at a chosen distance.

If you consistently aim at the centre of a target but your shot group lands, for example, several centimetres low and to the right, the sight needs to be adjusted.

Aimpoint red dots use two fundamental adjustment axes:

  • Elevation: adjusts the point of impact vertically.
  • Windage: adjusts the point of impact horizontally.

These corrections are made in clicks. The exact click value can vary depending on the Aimpoint model, so always check the specification for your particular sight before calculating any correction.

At what distance should you zero an Aimpoint?

For the initial setup, we recommend starting at 25 metres.

Beginning at this distance offers several practical advantages:

  • impacts are easier to locate on the target;
  • large initial errors are easier to correct;
  • less ammunition is normally required to establish the first adjustment;
  • the process is easier to understand and repeat.

However, there is an important distinction between initial zeroing at 25 metres and deciding that 25 metres is the final zero distance for your firearm.

The final zero should depend on:

  • the firearm;
  • the ammunition;
  • the intended use;
  • your normal shooting distance;
  • the level of precision required.

Once the initial setup is complete, the point of impact should therefore be confirmed at the distance that is genuinely relevant to the way the firearm will be used.

What do you need to zero an Aimpoint?

  • The firearm with the Aimpoint correctly installed.
  • A target with clear reference markings.
  • The ammunition you normally intend to use.
  • A stable shooting bench or rest.
  • The click value of your specific Aimpoint model.
  • An accurately measured shooting distance.

Before firing, also check that the mount and the Aimpoint itself are securely fitted.

A loose or unstable mounting system can cause the point of impact to shift from shot to shot. If the optic is moving in relation to the firearm, no amount of windage or elevation adjustment will produce a reliable zero.

How to zero an Aimpoint step by step

1. Place the target at 25 metres

For the initial setup, position the target at a measured distance of 25 metres.

Use a clear aiming mark so that every shot can be taken using exactly the same point of aim.

At this stage, the goal is not to react to every individual impact. The priority is to produce a representative shot group.

2. Stabilise the firearm

Place the firearm on a stable shooting rest or bench.

The less variation introduced by the shooter, the easier it becomes to determine whether the observed displacement is genuinely caused by the optic's adjustment.

3. Make an initial rough alignment

Place the red dot over the centre of the target.

If the sight is obviously far from zero, use the elevation and windage adjustments to make a rough initial correction.

The objective at this point is not a perfect zero. We simply want the first impacts to appear in a usable area of the target.

4. Fire a three-shot group

Fire three shots using exactly the same point of aim.

Then identify the approximate centre of that group.

This is considerably more useful than moving the adjustments after every single shot, because an isolated impact can be affected by many variables.

This was also the method used during the Aimpoint training session: several impacts were grouped and the centre of that group was used as the reference for the next correction.

5. Measure the displacement

Now compare:

  • the point you were aiming at;
  • the centre of the shot group.

The distance between these two points determines the correction that is required.

For example, if the group is low and to the right, you will need the appropriate vertical and horizontal correction using the elevation and windage adjustments.

6. Convert the displacement into clicks

This is one of the most important concepts in the entire zeroing process:

not every Aimpoint should automatically be assumed to use the same click value.

Do not memorise a generic instruction such as “move four clicks” and apply it to every sight.

You need to know:

  • the measured displacement;
  • the distance to the target;
  • the click value of the specific Aimpoint model.

Only then can you calculate how many clicks are actually required.

7. Adjust elevation and windage

Apply the calculated corrections.

Count or record the number of clicks used on each axis so that you know exactly what change has been introduced.

If the sight is significantly out of zero, it can be better to work progressively rather than making a very large correction in one movement.

This makes it easier to confirm that the point of impact is moving in the expected direction.

8. Fire another three-shot group

After making the adjustment, aim at exactly the same reference point and fire another three-shot group.

Evaluate the centre of the new group.

If there is still a meaningful offset, repeat the process:

shoot a group → measure → calculate → adjust → shoot again.

A few controlled groups will normally provide a more efficient zero than repeatedly adjusting the optic after each individual impact.

Which Aimpoint adjustment should you move?

Adjustment What it changes When to use it

Windage Horizontal point of impact When the group is too far left or right

Always follow the markings on the sight and the documentation for your particular model so that the correction is applied in the correct direction.

How many clicks does it take to zero an Aimpoint?

There is no universal answer.

The required number of clicks depends on three things:

  • how far the group is from the desired point of impact;
  • the shooting distance;
  • the click value of your particular Aimpoint.

This is why instructions such as “move five clicks up” are meaningless without knowing the rest of the information.

First measure how far the group needs to move. Then convert that displacement into clicks using the actual adjustment value of the optic.

MOA and click values: understand the angular measurement

MOA stands for Minute of Angle and is an angular measurement commonly used when discussing optics, dot size and sight adjustments.

Because it is angular rather than a fixed linear measurement, the physical distance represented by one MOA changes with range.

A common mistake: adjusting after every shot

One of the most common zeroing mistakes is to fire a single shot, look at the impact and immediately begin adjusting the sight.

It is generally better to work from a group.

A single impact can be affected by:

  • shooter error;
  • inconsistent firearm position;
  • ammunition variation;
  • trigger control;
  • the shooting rest;
  • environmental conditions.

Three reasonably close impacts give a much better indication of the actual relationship between the firearm, ammunition and optic.

A useful rule is:

do not chase every hole in the target — work from the centre of the group.

Why is the Aimpoint still producing inconsistent groups?

If the groups remain inconsistent after several adjustments, do not automatically keep turning the windage and elevation controls.

Check the rest of the system first:

  • Is the mount properly tightened?
  • Is there any movement between the optic and the firearm?
  • Are you using the same ammunition?
  • Is the shooting rest stable?
  • Are you using exactly the same point of aim?
  • Is the dot brightness appropriate?

An excessively bright dot can appear visually larger or less defined.

For zeroing, use a brightness level that allows you to see the dot clearly without unnecessarily obscuring the aiming mark.

Does the Aimpoint dot size affect zeroing?

Yes, but not because it changes the mechanical operation of the elevation or windage adjustments.

The dot size determines how much angular space the aiming point covers on the target.

A smaller dot provides a finer reference, while a larger dot is normally easier to acquire quickly.

Not necessarily.

Twenty-five metres is particularly useful for the initial setup, but it does not automatically replace confirmation at the actual intended shooting distance.

The projectile's trajectory does not remain permanently identical to the line of sight.

A zero established at one distance will therefore produce a different relationship between line of sight and point of impact at other distances.

The final setup should reflect:

  • firearm type;
  • ammunition;
  • normal shooting distance;
  • hunting or sporting application;
  • the precision you require.
