Types of air rifle powerplant

Spring-powered air rifles

A steel spring drives a piston that compresses the air behind the pellet. Spring rifles are self-contained and do not require CO₂ capsules, bottles or compressors.

Best suited to: beginners, training and recreational shooting. Consider cocking effort, weight, the firing cycle and scope compatibility.

Gas-piston, gas-ram and IGT air rifles

A sealed gas strut replaces the conventional coil spring. The rifle remains self-contained but delivers a different firing cycle and resonance pattern. IGT is Gamo's name for its inert-gas system.

Best suited to: shooters wanting a modern break-barrel platform without external charging equipment.

PCP air rifles

Pre-charged pneumatic rifles store high-pressure air in a reservoir and release a measured amount for each shot. Their low-movement firing cycle supports consistency, precision and multi-shot operation.

Best suited to: precision and experienced shooters. Include a pump, bottle or PCP compressor in the total budget.

CO₂ air rifles

CO₂ models use compatible capsules or bottles and allow repeated shots without cocking a break barrel or filling a high-pressure PCP reservoir.

Best suited to: plinking and recreational target shooting. Temperature, rate of fire and gas consumption affect shot count.

Six checks before buying

  1. Powerplant: choose between a self-contained rifle and the consistency of PCP.
  2. Calibre: match it to the platform, normal distance, projectile and permitted use.
  3. Ergonomics: check weight, length, balance, grip and cocking effort.
  4. Accuracy: velocity alone is not enough; barrel, trigger, pellet, optics and technique work together.
  5. Total cost: include optics, mounts and PCP charging equipment where required.
  6. Support: check the availability of magazines, seals, filling probes and spare parts.

Air rifle calibres: .177, .22 and .25

Calibre affects pellet weight and trajectory but should never be considered in isolation. The powerplant, available energy, shooting distance and selected projectile must work together.

.177 (4.5 mm)

Light pellets and a generally flatter trajectory. Widely used for beginners, training and paper-target shooting.

.22 (5.5 mm)

A versatile option using heavier pellets. Available across spring, gas-piston and PCP platforms.

.25 (6.35 mm)

Heavier projectiles and a more curved trajectory. Commonly associated with suitably configured PCP rifles.

For a closer comparison of the two larger PCP calibres, read .22 vs .25 PCP air rifles.

Maintenance and safe handling

An air rifle is not a toy. Handle it responsibly, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and always identify the target and what lies beyond it.

  • Wear eye protection and use a suitable pellet trap or backstop.
  • Keep your finger away from the trigger until you are ready to fire.
  • Never point an air rifle at people, animals or property.
  • Store it unloaded, in a dry location and away from minors.
  • Do not leave spring or gas-piston rifles cocked for extended periods.
  • Use suitable maintenance products and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Follow all local rules governing purchase, power, transport and use.

Frequently asked questions about air rifles

What air rifle is suitable for a beginner?

A manageable spring or gas-piston rifle with reasonable cocking effort is often a good starting point. .177 and .22 both offer a wide choice of pellets.

What is the difference between PCP and spring power?

A PCP stores high-pressure air and requires charging equipment. A spring rifle generates the required pressure during each cocking cycle and is fully self-contained.

Is a gas piston better than a spring?

Not in every case. A gas piston removes the coil spring and changes the firing cycle, but accuracy still depends on the barrel, trigger, pellet, hold and optics.

Which calibre should I choose?

.177 is common for beginners and targets, .22 is highly versatile, and .25 uses heavier projectiles and requires a suitable platform.

Does every PCP require a compressor?

No. Depending on the rifle and reservoir, it may be filled with a compatible hand pump, compressed-air bottle or PCP compressor.

Can I fit any scope to an air rifle?

No. The rail and mounts must be compatible. Spring and gas-piston rifles require optics designed to withstand their distinctive recoil cycle.

Which air rifle pellets are most accurate?

There is no universal answer. Test suitable pellet weights, profiles and head diameters to find the best grouping in the individual barrel.

Does Carbin ship air rifles internationally?

Yes, where the product type, destination and applicable regulations allow it. Buyers are responsible for checking their local requirements.

I ordered a batch of metallic ammunition at the best price I found anywhere I looked, and they kept me frequently updated via WhatsApp about the order! They were attentive, friendly, and helpful! I placed the order on Saturday, they shipped it yesterday, and it arrived early this morning! 100% recommended!

Hello, Despite my antivirus alerts, this website is trustworthy. Very competitive prices, excellent communication, and incredibly fast delivery times. I placed an order on December 17, 2025, after contacting them by phone. They were very helpful and did everything they could to ship the package the same day... And indeed, it arrived two days later, on December 19, 2025, at 8:51 a.m. (Shipping from Spain to France, amazing!)

I had the pleasure of purchasing the 150th Anniversary Edition Cometa 400 Fenix at the lowest price I could find online from these kind people. I also indicated that I am passionate about wood and that it would be great if they could send me a nicely figured example. These come with Spanish Walnut stocks. I'm not sure what was done in the background, but I can certainly say my hopes were met on this point!! Excellent communication and overall customer service as I had a few inquiries that were promptly answered. Shipping to France was FAST, easy, and inexpensive. I don't normally write these reviews, but this exceptional service motivated me to do so. I highly recommend this store!
