Garmin offers several specialist product families. Although certain devices can communicate with each other, not every collar, handheld, sensor or accessory is compatible with every Garmin range. The first step is therefore to define the intended use and then confirm the exact compatibility of every component.

Garmin dog tracking systems for hunting

Garmin Alpha systems combine a handheld device with a compatible GPS transmitter collar. The handler can view information such as the dog’s position, distance and direction of travel on the handheld display.

Dog tracking is particularly valuable when working in woodland, mountains, steep valleys or large hunting areas. It can also make it easier to recover a dog after the hunt and help the handler react sooner if it approaches a road or leaves the intended area.

Available equipment includes the Garmin Alpha T20 GPS dog collar, designed for use with compatible Garmin handhelds. Always check the model, region and radio-frequency compatibility before selecting a collar.

Garmin tracking for one or multiple dogs

A system for one dog

If you want to track one dog and do not yet own any components, a complete package containing a handheld and compatible collar is usually the simplest option. If you already have a Garmin handheld, a compatible additional collar may be all you need.

Multi-dog tracking

When tracking several dogs, the maximum number of supported collars is not the only consideration. Clear mapping, rapid selection of each dog and straightforward identification by name or collar colour are also important during active hunting.

The number of dogs that can be tracked and the functions available depend on the handheld, the paired collars and the system configuration.

Garmin Xero ballistic chronographs

Garmin Xero chronographs are designed to measure projectile velocity. The recorded values help shooters assess ammunition consistency, compare different setups and obtain useful information for ballistic calculations.

Subject to the measurement range and manufacturer’s specifications for the selected model, a chronograph may be used for:

• Shooting sports with firearms.
• Testing and developing handloads.
• Air rifles and air pistols.
• Airsoft, archery and other compatible projectiles.
• Comparing velocity and shot-to-shot consistency.

A chronograph measures velocity; it does not measure chamber pressure. A velocity reading that appears normal does not prove that a load is safe. Always follow reliable published load data and recognised safety procedures when handloading ammunition.

Garmin watches and outdoor navigation

Depending on the model, Garmin watches and handheld GPS devices may include navigation, mapping, activity recording and outdoor functions. Not every Garmin watch offers the same maps, battery life or connectivity with dog-tracking equipment.

When choosing a Garmin watch for hunting, hiking or mountain use, consider:

• The maps and navigation functions included.
• Battery life during everyday and active GPS use.
• Water resistance and suitability for demanding conditions.
• Display size, weight and readability.
• Compatibility with smartphones and other Garmin equipment.
