Guide Sensmart thermal imaging for observation and hunting

Guide Sensmart offers several types of thermal device: handheld monoculars for observation, thermal binoculars, riflescopes and clip-on attachments designed for compatible daytime riflescopes. Each format has a different purpose. Start by deciding how you intend to use the device, then compare the specifications of individual models.

This collection includes devices with different sensors, lenses, fields of view and power systems. Some versions feature a laser rangefinder (LRF); others prioritise compact size or comfortable observation over longer periods. Always check the full model name and generation. Devices in the same series do not necessarily share every specification.

To compare formats and manufacturers, browse our wider range of thermal imaging devices.

Which type of Guide Sensmart device do you need?

A monocular, binocular, riflescope and clip-on can all produce a thermal image, but they work in different ways. Identify the format that suits your intended use before comparing sensor figures or advertised detection ranges.

DevicePrimary useWhat to check
Thermal monocularHandheld observation through one eyepiece.Field of view, sensor, focus, weight and battery life.
Thermal binocularObservation through two eyepieces.Comfort, adjustment, weight and image specifications.
Thermal riflescopeSelf-contained thermal aiming optic.Model features and stated mounting compatibility.
Thermal clip-onUse with a compatible daytime riflescope.Attachment, adaptor, daytime scope and manufacturer guidance.

Guide thermal monoculars: TE, TD and TJ

Guide thermal monoculars let you observe with a portable device independently of an optic mounted on a rifle. The collection includes models from the TE, TD and TJ series, among others. Features and performance vary by model and generation.

Consider how much ground you need to see at once. A wider field of view helps you scan a larger area. Higher base magnification may suit observation of a more distant object, but it generally shows a narrower section of the scene.

Handling matters too. Check how easily you can focus, where the controls sit, how the eyepiece adjusts, and the device’s weight and battery system. During longer observation sessions, these details can matter as much as a sensor figure.

Guide thermal binoculars for two-eye observation

The collection also includes Guide thermal binoculars from the TN series. Two eyepieces may be more comfortable for someone who prefers observing with both eyes over an extended period.

Check the adjustment between eyepieces, handling and weight of the exact model. A binocular design does not automatically provide higher resolution or a wider field of view than a monocular; those characteristics depend on its sensor and optics.

Guide thermal riflescopes: TU and other models

A Guide thermal riflescope has its own imaging and aiming functions. This collection includes different TU models, with specifications that can change between versions and generations.

Read the full product specification before choosing: sensor resolution, thermal sensitivity, field of view, base magnification, battery life and mounting compatibility. Confirm additional features such as recording or laser ranging for the exact product reference rather than assuming they are present throughout a series.

If you are also choosing a conventional daytime optic, our guide to choosing a hunting riflescope explains the characteristics worth comparing. The linked page has a legacy URL, so use its page title to identify it.

Guide thermal clip-ons: TB series and compatible adaptors

Guide thermal clip-ons, including models in the TB series, are designed to work with compatible daytime riflescopes. Choosing one involves more than selecting the thermal device: the scope, adaptor and dimensions of the assembled system must also match.

Check the exact clip-on model and generation, the specified adaptor and the outside diameter of the scope’s objective housing at the clamping point. A scope advertised with a 50 mm objective, for example, does not necessarily have a 50 mm outside diameter where the adaptor attaches.

Browse our thermal clip-on attachments to compare available options. A mechanical fit alone does not confirm that the complete combination meets the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements.

Sensor resolution and display resolution are different

Thermal sensor resolution describes how many detector elements capture the scene. Display resolution describes how that information is shown to the user. A high-resolution display can make viewing more comfortable, but it cannot recover detail that the sensor did not capture.

When comparing two Guide devices, check the detector’s native resolution and the display resolution separately. Image processing also affects the result, so no single large number in a specification sheet tells the whole story.

What does NETD tell you?

NETD describes thermal sensitivity and is usually expressed in millikelvin (mK). When figures are measured under comparable conditions, a lower value indicates a better ability to distinguish small temperature differences from detector noise.

NETD alone does not guarantee the best image. The sensor, lens, focus, image processing and actual temperature contrast of the scene also matter. Before comparing published figures, check the manufacturer’s measurement conditions and whether the figure refers to the detector or another part of the system.

Lens focal length and field of view

The lens’s focal length affects how much of the scene appears in the image. With the same sensor, a longer focal length generally gives a narrower field of view and places more pixels on a distant object. A shorter focal length covers a wider area.

The right choice depends on what you need to observe. Compare fields of view in degrees or in metres at a stated distance, using the same units for both devices. Lens aperture, expressed as an f-number, is a separate specification from focal length.

Also distinguish base magnification from digital zoom. Digital zoom enlarges an image already captured; it does not add new detail to the sensor image.

Detection, recognition and identification are different

An advertised detection range means a heat signature may be perceived under specified reference conditions. It does not mean the object can necessarily be recognised or identified with sufficient detail at that distance.

Object size and orientation, distance, thermal contrast, vegetation and weather all affect what you can see. Treat range figures as a way to compare models, not as guaranteed identification distances.

Thermal imaging shows temperature differences. It cannot see through walls, ordinary glass or dense vegetation. Rain and fog can also reduce contrast and useful observation range.

What does an LRF laser rangefinder add?

Some Guide models include a laser rangefinder and carry the LRF designation. It measures distance within the conditions specified for that particular model.

A rangefinder provides an additional measurement, but it does not improve thermal sensor resolution. Its maximum measurement range is not an identification range. Compare ranging performance and image performance separately.

Battery life, weight and what is included

Before buying, check how the exact Guide model is powered, whether its battery can be replaced and the manufacturer’s stated runtime. Actual battery life can vary with temperature, display brightness, recording and wireless connections.

Consider the weight of the configuration you will actually use. A clip-on adaptor is part of that setup, so check whether it is supplied or sold separately. The same applies to spare batteries and other accessories: rely on the contents listed for the exact product.

Guide thermal imaging or night vision?

Thermal imaging uses infrared radiation to represent temperature differences in a scene. Depending on the technology, night vision devices use available light or supplementary illumination. They produce different types of image.

To compare the options, visit our night vision devices. Choose according to the image you need, your intended conditions and the specifications of each model.

How to compare two Guide Sensmart models

Start with the full product names and generations. Then compare:

  • Device type: monocular, binocular, riflescope or clip-on.
  • Thermal image: sensor resolution, NETD and display specifications.
  • Optics: focal length, base magnification and field of view.
  • Features: laser rangefinder, recording and connectivity where included.
  • Handling: weight, controls, power system and stated runtime.

  • Box contents: supplied adaptors, batteries and other components.

Frequently asked questions about Guide Sensmart

Which Guide device should I choose for handheld observation?

A thermal monocular is designed for portable observation through one eyepiece. If you prefer using both eyes, compare thermal binoculars. For either format, check field of view, weight and battery life.

What is the difference between a Guide monocular and a thermal riflescope?

A monocular is intended for portable observation. A thermal riflescope has aiming functions and requires a compatible mount. The two device types are not interchangeable.

What is the difference between a thermal riflescope and a clip-on?

A thermal riflescope is a self-contained aiming optic. A clip-on is intended to work with a compatible daytime riflescope, so the attachment, adaptor and scope must be checked together.

What does LRF mean on a Guide device?

LRF identifies a model with a laser rangefinder. Check that model’s specifications for measurement range and conditions. Not every device in a series has this feature.

Does a lower NETD guarantee a better image?

Under comparable measurement conditions, it indicates better thermal sensitivity. The image also depends on the sensor, lens, focus, processing and observation conditions.

Is display resolution the same as sensor resolution?

No. The sensor captures thermal information and the display shows it. Compare the two specifications separately.

Is a longer focal length always better?

No. With the same sensor, a longer focal length narrows the field of view and may show a distant object across more pixels. Choose according to how much ground you need to see at once.

Can I identify an animal at the advertised detection range?

Detection range alone cannot answer that. Detecting a heat signature, recognising a shape and identifying an animal require different levels of image detail.

Will any Guide clip-on fit my daytime riflescope?

No. Check the exact clip-on version, riflescope model, outside diameter at the clamping point and specified adaptor. Follow the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the whole setup.

What details should I provide when asking about a Guide device?

Tell us your intended use and the full names of the models you are comparing. For a clip-on, also provide the make and exact model of your daytime riflescope and details of the proposed adaptor.
